Snow-blinded - Bolidechaser's 3rd Trip to Gold Basin
March 27-28, 1998

Meteorite hunters fom all over the country volunteer their efforts
in order to support the field work of professional researchers.
The information obtained from their meteorite finds is necessary in the
determination of the size of the strewnfield and of the parent meteoroid.

Bolidechaser's Trip Log:

During the last week of March, about fifteen (15) meteorite hunters from all over North America
converged on a small wash in the White Hills of Arizona. By the time I got there, half of that
number had already departed. Even though these were some of the most seasoned hunters, not
everybody that went home had made meteorite finds, but all renewed their appreciation
for the effort and luck it takes to make a find. Although I didn't go to Tucson this year,
I got to meet some of those dealers on this Gold Basin trip. This hunt became an unintentional
reunion, and could have been titled, "Tucson II - The Gold Basin Hunt". My sarcastic prediction
that the "Gold Basin Meteorite Ranch will need a parking lot with a shuttle" to handle the influx
of prospectors, took a step closer to reality when talk of forming a Tucson carpool was initiated.
If you want to join the So. Cal. carpool, contact Mike Blood. The good new is - Jim Kriegh has
announced that "all of this weeks meteorite hunters have reported to him all of their find's
locations and weights!" This new data will be added to his (the) field map. This is particularly
good news to me, since it was the aim of these web pages to foster and develop amateur &
professional cooperation in the field. This bodes well for future data collects.


Please Report Your Finds

    Information should include, but doesn't have to be limited to:

    • Longitude and Latitude of find location.
    • If not certain, then an "X" on a copy of a map will suffice.
    • Mass (approximate weight).
    • Depth of burial.
    • Anything notable about the find site.
    • Any interesting feature about the meteorite.
    • etc.

Snow storm cuts short Bolidechaser's 3rd Trip

First there was hail, then there was frozen rain, then there was a slush storm, and then there was several inches of snow at the 3000' level.
 I was lucky to get over the Dolan Springs Pass, because within the hour there was 6" of snow here!
