Because our little escort vessel "De Bitter" had to be repaired in Syracuse we steamed around for almost four days and nights throught the Strait of Sicily (Scylla and Charibdis) and along the beautiful southwest coast of Italy. It so happened that the Etna produced a serious eruption, which we viewed at night using a large telescope. The "Doorman" was requested to stand by in case any evacuations were required - which proved unnecessary. We went as far as the proverbial city of Naples and the romantic Isle of Capri - but that's on the next page.
