The good ship Doorman hastens home Again, full of enthusiasm Two churning screws beat Her through the wide Ocean Already she’s soaring right through the dull And dirty little Gulf of Biscay; And even if at times there are high seas here That’s none of her business now, For whether it is moist or dry The Doorman lifts her skirts And rushes, full of joy and spirit Right through the Straights of Dover But not too fast, ‘cause always is there Just behind her, de small ship “Bitter”, Which cannot trust her diesel engines And continues to push heavily Against waves, winds and currents Just to keep up with us. It’s not that long ago That we were sliding along the swells Of this same but less attractive Dirty little Gulf of Biscay Then we still sailed on a Southward track Right after departing Rotterdam And steamed both frolicking together Towards the Mediterrranean Seas. We almost lost, and that’s a fact Our sister ship the Bitter Because she was almost inundated Beneath the waves as high as houses Of this same small angry Dirty little Gulf of Biscay But she managed nevertheless That she signalled from Cape Finister Full of guts - that poor good soul ‘Everything is under control” And soon we saw appearing The dolphins a-jumping In the old narrow Strait Where the Rock of Tarik stands We then quickly put on Out white hats and white caps Because the Sun soon started shining As if it was mid-summer Furies, Otters, Fireflies Lustfully listened to the tune Of “a bird comes aflying” And we followed with our eyes How they landed on the deck And sometimes even into the gate! Day after day passed that way And again everyone was pleased When we - neatly assembled on deck - Slid into the harbor of Malta Town of knights and of stairs Where we finally could walk around, And visit the catacombs Won honors in sport games Searched for souvenirs and coffee Bought stacks of postcards And then, at 9:30 on Sunday Were allowed to see Princess Elizabeth. |
Hier bericht, Dit is Capri! |
After a week of heavy flying We let ourselves be peacefully rocked Along the Italian coasts. Sitting and resting in the sunlight Topless, without any shirts Just like on a tourist ship Not so de little ship "Bitter" Cause they decided that it Could not attend this time, On account of pain in the diesel. Syracuse was the town Which they then picked To take care of that problem And at the same time pick up Some pleasure and sunshine, It was already in the evening, when We in our turn ended up In the fairy tale on the beaches Where, with thousands of lights tinkling, Evermore in the dark of the Italian night and with their light and strange Beauty, one town after another came Floating past the Doorman. But we could not stay there Because see: out of the waves Emerges the very Stromboli! And when it dawns next Everyone hears the wake-up call: "Attention! Here's a message: This is Capri! But the visibility Is rather poor today, Otherwise we would be pleased To also show you Naples". What a pity. But perchance This is not so bad after all Because to see Naples is unhealthy! However, whichever way it goes, We continued our lazy and slow cruise (Because it was Sunday, you know) On the mirrorsmooth sea Heading for Etna: the wild volcano. We barely got there when The volcano actually gave a free show Of true firespitting. In the end, we departed, To resume our service: Our boxes up into the air, And the "Doorman" fleeing From the rapid "Tigershark" Till we arrived in the Bay Of the City whose images Still reach us in our dreams: Sunny, sweet Valencia! When the "Doorman" will shortly Rumble through the Waterweg And carry us to the Christmas tree, Then that will be, in ice and snow The end of a beautiful cruise, Try to remember it so once in a while! (And say "Thank you" to the bridge). |
