Kubah    National    Park

Gazetted in 1989, the Park is spread over 2,220 hectares and composed primarily of sandstone, siltstone and shale. The Plateau Sandstone Formation has built a scrap-bounded sandstone range which includes Mt. Serapi, Mt. Selang and Mt. Sendok. The presence of at least three bands of hardened sandstone between the 150 m and 400 m contour lines cause the head-waters of most streams, which are crystal clear and fast flowing to flow over a series of waterfalls. At least seven waterfalls in three sets can be found, some 10m in height.

The forest is generally mixed dipterocarp forest, containing several species of fruiting trees, and interspersed with patches of scrub forest or kerangas. The kerangas found here is richer than usual, due likely to the lowland topography and the igneous intrusions making up the hilltops. Its rich forest, its proximity to the mangrove, and its dissected terrain supports a large and varied animal community, such as bearded pig, mouse-deer, squirrel, black hornbill and many species of amphibians and reptiles. Kubah is also rich in palms and orchids. These include several species of Licuala, Rattans, Pantu, Pinanga, Appendicula, Dipodium and Eria.

The Park is located about 20 km (by road) from Kuching making it very accessible for day-trippers. For visitors who wish to explore more, an overnight trip is recommended with accommodation with basic overnight facilities.
