The Stone Spinners

My current work in progress (not counting these web pages) is a novel called "The Stone Spinners", for now. It's a fantasy epic, somewhere along the lines of Robert Jordan's work, although I don't claim to have his talent....yet. Anyway, below is the prologue of the book, to give you an idea of my writing style & the mood of the book. If you have any suggestions or comments, please e-mail me. As a writer, I need & want constructive criticism, especially since this book is headed for publication within the next 1-2 years! Thank you!

Prologue: The Year of the Cleansing

The mage-born's young wife crept quickly through the underbrush,
her belly heavy with the child she would soon deliver. It had been
three days since the nobles had raided the castle; three days since
she had heard her husband's death cry & the clatter of stones hitting
the floor; three days since her maid, cunning & loyal to the end, had
cried out against the nobles who had killed "her" husband. This had
allowed the young wife to escape, although she was far from safe.
The nobles would realize their mistake soon enough, if they hadn't
already.
Just as she saw the smoke of the next village's cooking fires, the
young woman doubled over with her first sharp pain. She would have
to stop here. Her second pain, a few minutes closer to the village,
made her cry out. Her cry brought people running from cottages on
the outskirts of the village & she was taken to a hut as soon as she
was found. The mid-wife who attended her occupied her during the
labor by asking her story, which was heard with sympathy, but also
kept secret from the rest of the village. These were dangerous times.
During her labor, the mage-wife was dimly aware of another, younger
mid-wife who kept running in & out of the hut for supplies. However,
the importance of this was lost to her as her strength was drained
with each birthing pain. The mid-wife became increasingly frantic as
the young woman drifted in & out of consciousness. As blackness
swelled up around her, the young woman heard her baby's cry.
The mid-wife cradled the newborn mage-boy in her arms & looked
at his mother in dismay. Just as she turned to clean the child, her
assistant came in with tears welling up in her eyes. She held a small
blue newborn in her arms. The mid-wife shook her head sadly, then a
strange light came into her eyes. With a finger to her lips & a warning
look to her young assistant, she took the dead child & laid it in the
mage-wife's limp arms. She then handed the crying mage-boy to her
assistant & sent her on her way.
