Past Activities

In the past two and a half decades, the Association For British Muslims has engaged in a number of activities. Some of the more noteworthy are listed below:

a) held classes at the Islamic Cultural Centre, London, on the following subjects: "Practical Islam for Beginners", "Introduction to Islam", "Basics of Islam";

b) conducted marriages and burials;

c) provided a service of Islamic instruction to non-Muslim schools in Britain;

d) held occasional conferences, for example in London and North-East England;

e) published a monthly bulletin, as well as a Junior Bulletin;

f) distributed articles and fact-sheets on the basics of Islam through the ABM mail-order "Shop" [a booklist and bulletins were also available];

g) established a youth organisation for students and younger members;

h) organised group visits to the Islamic Cultural Centre/London Central Mosque for school children, along with a lecture about Islam;

i) lectured at various schools around the country;

j) made frequent visits to hospitals and prisons.

k) provided - as we still do - a counselling and advice service dealing with most of the issues afflicting the Muslim communities here.

l) through certain members been deeply involved in Bosnia. A number of convoy crews were British Muslims, because of the racial policy of the Croats (anyone not white met a great deal of suspicion as being a possible "mujahid"). One member, Ibrahim Golightly Shaheed, the Field Manager for Phoenix Aid International Direct, was killed in Sarajevo in 1995.
