Education and Outreach

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM:

Biological Training Opportunities: This program focuses on the isolation, preparation, handling and usage of all types of human tissue for flow cytometric evaluation.

  1. Multiple antibodies: Strategies used for staining cells with multiple antibodies simultaneously will be described. The proper verification methods and pitfalls will be discussed. Both antibodies to extracellular and intercellular epitopes will be discussed.
  2. DNA Measurements: An overview of DNA content measurements will be described including the current reagents available and when they should be used. The use of BrDU as a quenching reagent for Hoechst or in combination with a specific antibody including two color labeling with IUDR, will be described.
  3. Cell function: The use of specific molecular probes for evaluating cell function will be discussed. These will include calcium measurements in real time, pH measurements, molecular transfection, mitochondrial and membrane potential dyes and multidrug resistance function.
Flow Cytometry Training: The focus of this program is on multiparameter data acquisition.
  1. Measurement Parameters: A detailed description flow cytometry measurements will be described. This includes FSC, SSC, ALL, fluorescence, polarization, time of flight and fluorescence decay.
  2. Compensation: Theory, practical problems and pitfalls in fluorescence compensation will be discussed. New software methodologies for addressing these problems will be described.
  3. Multiparameter Data Analysis: Instructions on the use of several multiparameter data analysis programs are given. Strategies in pattern recognition will be emphasized. A learning file is initially evaluated to teach the position, problems, and pitfalls for identification of populations. The transfer of this to batch processing of similar data files will be discussed. The concepts of principle components, analysis and clustering will be experienced. Methods for networking PC's, HP's and Macintosh computers together will be explored. The use of mass data storage and archiving will also be discussed.
Pathology Graduate Program: A Masters or Ph.D. program in Experimental Pathology or Immunology is available through the Roswell Park Graduate Division of the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNYAB). Individuals seeking either program may apply directly to the graduate division and mention flow cytometry as the preferred specialty. Tuition for the Masters and Ph.D. programs can be waived for qualifying candidates and a work study program is available that will provide modest living expenses. A stipend ($10,700) is available for qualifying Ph.D. candidates.

Local Accommodations: The Pillars, which is adjacent to RPCI, has rates between $40.00 and $79.00 depending on the length of stay. The Holiday Inn ($71 per night) has free shuttle service to both the Buffalo Airport and RPCI. Local restaurants abound within walking distance of either RPCI or the Holiday Inn. Other hotels and rental locations (for longer visits) are available.

Transportation: Bus, Amtrak and Airline service to Buffalo is convenient and frequent. RPCI is 10 min. by taxi, limo, or subway from the bus (Oak St.) or train stations (Exchange St.) or 15 min. from the airport by taxis or limo. All major rental car agencies are at all three locations.

Cost of Internships: A basic rate of $100/day is charged for standard laboratory tests. These include standard reagents, antibodies and flow cytometry time. Costs for non standard materials or supplies if any, will be determined after discussion of the particular project requirements. All times during the year are equally good except the Thanksgiving to Christmas period.

OUTREACH PROGRAM

The Great Lakes International Imaging and Flow Cytometry Association Meeting:

There are several regional users meetings that have been successful in providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and information related to flow cytometry. These meetings are often sponsored by the companies that offer instruments and reagents. The Great Lakes region has a very high concentration of flow cytometry laboratories and this association was formed to bring together all flow cytometry users and especially their students. The meeting, held annually on the first weekend of October in Milwaukee, WI, 1999, is open to anyone. Registration is $65.00 and includes a reception Friday, breakfast, lunch and a banquet on Saturday and a breakfast on Sunday. The major focus of this meeting is to bring clinical and research applications together. Of particular importance to us will be students, post doctoral fellows and young investigators to highlight their research and provide a forum for its presentation.
