Gertrude was born in Christiania (Oslo) Norway on 22 August, 1876 and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was 9 years old. The family changed their name from Gulbrandsen (Gilbronsen) to Gilbert at the Immigration Entry Point. The family moved to the Chicago, Cook County, Illinois area where she met Harvey Ludington. They were married in Chicago in 1896 and soon thereafter the family moved to the Seattle, King County, Washington area. Harvey and Gertrude had 8 children.

Harvey Samuel Ludington
Harvey was born in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois on 18 March 1860 to Harvey and Catherine (Williams) Ludington. (His obituary published in the Seattle Times has him born in 1850) Little is known about his occupation in Illinois except that he did surveying. He went to Chicago for the funeral of his brother, who at the time was engaged to Gertrude. He and Gertrude fell in love and were married in 1896. The family moved to Seattle in 1898 headed for the Alaskan gold fields. Gertrude took sick and the family stayed in Seattle where Harvey worked as a longshoreman, surveyor and then as a brakeman for the railroad. He was a Motorman for the Seattle Trolley System and operated the first trip around Green Lake. Harvey was cremated and his ashes were spread on Puget Sound just off the Seattle waterfront.
