Jeep Sprung

A little note to say, I ramped a 1000 RTI the other day with this setup on a 20* ramp.

I decided to use the jeep springs because of the ride quality I would recieve, that was the excuse any way. Really, I just wanted to put bigger meats on!

Here is What you need for the project.

  • 4- front cj spring packs(76-86)
  • extended brakelines
  • longer shocks
  • 8- 1/2" bolts 3.5" long
  • 8- 1/2" nyla-loc nuts
  • Longer shackles
  • steering correction, Z-link or Drop pitman arm

Here's how I did the conversion. Jack up the rear of the vehicle and secure the frame on jack stands. Unbolt the shocks and remove them. Take off the axle U-bolts and remove the springs. You'll have to redrill the jeep springs about 1 3/4" to move the mounting locations forward, if you dont the axle sits too far to the rear of the vehicle. I also had to redrill the spring hanger bolt hole for the rear springs to bolt to the frame bracket, I used a 1/2" drill bit. Next install the springs into the frame mount using the jeep bolts. For the shackles I used my own that I made. The holes for the bolts are 7" apart on center. Use 1/2" bolts with nylalocks for the shackles. Once the shackles are installed, jack the frame of the truck up till the springs touch the bottom of the axle. Then reinstall your U-bolts, and shocks. Below is a listing for shocks, with part #'s and lengths.

Now its time to move to the front. Once again jack up the truck and secure on jack stands. Remove the shocks, U-bolts, and springs. I had trouble removing the spring mount bolts on the front and had to grind the head and nut off the bolt to get it out. OK, remove the top main leaf from the stock rear spring pack and remove the main leaf from the jeep pack. Now put the samurai rear main leaf on the jeep pack. Install the spring pack in the frame mount. If you have to replace the bolts for the frame mount they are a 12mm bolt. Use a shackle with the holes 6" on center this should make the truck set level. jack the frame up till the springs and axle touch line up your pins and install your U-bolts and shocks.

Brake lines are another issue, you must use extended brake lines with this set up! I used Front brake lines for a 93 geo metro they are 8 1/4" longer than stock, and they use the same clips and ends. The rear line is from a 84 Toyota 4X4 truck. These you need two small hose clamps to put on each end to hold them in place, because the clip styles are different.

I am going to add a 2 " add-a-leaf for a little more clearance and to stiffen the ride. I found out the jeep springs give too much body roll for me, and they also will let the shocks bottom out. They will be here in the middle of august. Until then.

UPDATE: I installed the add-a-leafs and they are doing great. No more major body roll. The flex in the springs seem to be better than before so I am happy about that. I did not have to sacrifice the flex or the ride quality, even though I can feel a few more bumps in the road it still rides a lot better than stock springs.

Update 2 I used new poly bushings in my springs. I was ask where I got them and the part #'s. I got them from J.C. Whitney catalog. I know some people dont like them but they have always treated me good. Sammi spring bushings: 1 set front or rear-#38ND1754X $16.95. Jeep Spring bushings 76-86: front set 38ND1650X $17.95. You will have to trim down the metal sleeve of the jeep bushings so it will fit into the sami spring bracket. The add a leafs were also ordered from whitney's #81ND1025Y $33.99 a set you need 2 sets.

Here are the shock listings and brake line #'s.
