CANADIAN ENGINES, Limited.
(Monarch).
Dunnville, Ontario.
This is a "Monarch" engine built in Dunnville Ontario which has a Bosch
magneto which I have never seen before. It is an oscillating high tension
mag with two horseshoe magnets side by side. The frame is all brass. The
round cover on the back where I presume the points are is brass. The base
has New York stamped in it. On the top cover under the horseshoes it says
Bosch Patent pending. Type 33. The serial number 1860593 is also stamped in
the brass base. This mag is nothing like an AB33 Bosch that is on a
Fairbanks engine.
The "Monarch" is the trade name for the engines built by the "Canadian
Engines Ltd." Co. in Dunnville Ontario. I have a little history which comes
from an old gentleman who studied many Canadian engine Companies. I will
quote from a letter he had written to me in 1995. Mr. George McCrae and
several others came down (to Dunnville)in 1905, from Brantford, possibly
from Goold Shapley & Muir, and began a company. The early air and water
cooled "Canadian" are nearly a carbon copy of The Gade engines From Iowa
Falls, IOWA., who began building air cooled with exhaust port in the cylinder
as well as in the head. There is an air cooled "Canadian" dated July
22,1910 in the Milton Ontario Agricultural Museum. The McCrae engine works
commenced operations June 4,1912. Canadaian patent #140,944 was issued to
George McCrae, Dunnville, Ontario for the McCrae Carburettor. In Aug, 1912,
the Company name was changed from the "Canadian-American Gas Engine Co.
Ltd." to the "Canadian Engines Ltd." and the brand name of the engine was
changed from "The Canadian" to "The Monarch" The Plant burned down on Oct.
16, 1923 with all records lost and was never rebuilt. Thus was the end of
the Monarch engine.
My engine is probably a 1917 0r 1918. The brass tag says "The Canadian
engine" and it is a 3-1/2HP.....Larry Anger.
