Things could only get better for Acari after he lost his pro debut on
cuts. Get better it did! The southpaw from Italy would win his next 11
fights and defeat the crafty former champion Joe "Old Bones" Brown for
the best win of his career to that point. His skin would once again set
Acari back when he lost on cuts to Massimo Consolati in his challenge
for the Italian jr. welterweight title. Most had Acari ahead at the time
of the stoppage. This would be his last setback as a pro and he reeled
off a 61 fight unbeaten streak against solid opposition. Acari first won
a European championship in 1968 by knocking out forgetable Johann Orsolics
before winning the WBC jr. welterweight title from rugged Philipino Pedro
Atigue in Rome. Acari enjoyed the home advantage in all but one of his
title defenses against his 9 title challengers. He did not need hometown
judging however as he knocked out 6 of his nine challengers. Acari gave
up his crown in 1974 when he could no longer make the weight limit. He
fought on for 4 more years but could never secure title shot at the
welterweight level.
