Chionoi was the Daniel Zaragoza of Thailand and unlike most Thai fighters
was able to come back from title loosing efforts to win other titles and
have a long career. The son of a policeman he began to box at the age of
11 trying to follow in the steps of Thai Chamrern Songkitrat. At the age
of 15 Chartchai turned pro and it took 8 years of fighting in the far east
before he would gain his first title shot against Scotland's Walter McGowan.
Cheered on by 16,000 fans and the King of Thailand he won the majority of
the rounds before a severe cut on McGowan's nose forced the stoppage of the
fight. In a move that few Thai champions would have attempted he gave
McGowan a rematch in England, the same result ensued as McGowan was stopped
on cuts again. Chionoi's was not a stranger to fighting abroad and would
have retained his titles longer if he like his countryman would have boxed
exclusively in Thailand. In 1968 Chionoi traveled to Mexico and beat Efran
Torres in a great fight that saw Chionoi come back strong in the later
rounds and stop Torres in the 13th round. A rematch saw Torres beat
Chionoi in 8 rounds and left Chionoi considering retirement. A third fight
with Torres was set up in Thailand and the King of Thailand once again saw
Chionoi come out ahead with a deserved points victory. Perhaps weakend by
his last fight Chionoi was upset by Erbito Salavarria in his next fight.
This was followed by a unsuccessful try at the title held by very talented
Masao Ohba (who tragically died in a car crash during his reign) who won
on points over 12 rounds. The title was left vacant by the death of Ohba
and Chionoi out-boxed Fritz Cervet for the vacant title. Again his reign
was short and Susumu Hanagata of Japan knocked out the now 32 year old
Chionoi in Tokyo. After another loss in Panama Chionoi decided to retire.
