Galindez had a reputation as a wild man both in and out of the ring and
lived life on the edge. His boxing skills were very good and his punch
was better. He only held the WBA title but he was good enough to reign
in any era. As a boy Victor worked the fields of his uncles farm but by
the age of 16 was fighting in unlicensed bouts, showing up in leopard skin
robes and trunks. At the age of 19 Galindez hiding his past pro bouts
boxed for Argentina in the 1968 Olympics. After he lost he resumed his
"official" pro career. Because of his penchant for partying his career did
not take off to well only wining half of his first 22 fights. I am not
sure what happened after the 22nd bout but he matured almost overnight and
went on a 23 bout wining streak. The Argentine and South American titles
were won during this streak. In his first world title bout Galindez took
apart American Len Hutchins in 13 rounds. The amazing part was not the
fight but the fact that Galindez smashed his right knee in a car accident
and damaged his angle all one month before his title fight. To top that
off he became ill the day of the fight after eating a local specialty a
plate of frogs before the fight! Galindez was a popular champion
(especially in Italy) who reigned for 4 years and 10 title defenses
against good fighters all over the world. Jorge Ahumada, Jaqui Lopez,
Richie Kates, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad were all beaten. The last 3 he beat
twice. The first fight with Kates in South Africa was a thrilling blood
bath where Galindez came back to knockout Kates in the last round to
retain his title. His lifestyle started to catch up with Galindez and he
found it harder to make the weight. This was his undoing when Mike Rossman
upset him in New Orleans. In the rematch a fit Galindez beat Rossman with
one arm as Galindez dislocated his elbow but managed to fight on to win a
decision. It was a short lived victory however when Marvin Johnson broke
the jaw of Galindez in the next title defense and took his title. He would
only box and win one more time before detached retinas in both eyes forced
Victor into retirement. Galindez was a avid car racing fan and while
learning to become a pro racer his car broke down on the track. Galindez
was standing by his broken down car when another racer lost control of his
car and mowed Galindez down taking his life instantly. Galindez lived fast
and packed a long lifetime of memories into a all too short life.
