.........Operating System. I used DOS for years. I have a button that
........ says, Windows isn't a virus, virus's do something. However, I
........ learned to live with Windows when it came up to 3.1 and DOS
.........got to version 5 and the PC got above 20 megahertz speed.
.........On the 486 I learned to like windows because it quit crashing
....... as often. I now have a Pentium and Windows 95. The best
.........thing about Windows 95 is that it does do multi-tasking and I
........have always been one to try to do 2 or 3 things simultaneously.
.........However, Windows 95 is a disk hog. While I do not get the out
.........of memory errors that I got in Windows 3.1, I find that Windows
.........95 takes a lot of disk space that keeps growing as you add
.........and delete new software. I still crash it occasionally and have
.........had to reload it 5 times in the last year, but it is better. More
..........RAM helps both.
..........Office 95 or 97 now, is a great package. It has a very capable
.......... word processor, the best of the spread sheets, Excel, and a
........... very extensive database. Powerpoint is not bad either. You
........... can easily cut and paste data from one to the other except the
........... Access Database program that is not that compatible with
........... other things. Access is only easy to use if you use one of the
............existing templates that come delivered with the software, or
........... copy a database from a friend.
............File Maker Pro is a very easy to use database that can export
...........to a spread sheet that you can import into Excel and then
......... export from Excel into dBase and then back up to File Maker
......... Pro. I believe the latest version is for Windows 95 and I
........ presume 32 bit, but I have been using a previous version with
..........no problems.
..........Winzip or something to zip and unzip files is a must.
..........A virus checker is good to have. I prefer Norton Utilities, but
..........McAffey is fine too. Be sure to download the latest versions
..........off the web.
......... Windows comes with some graphics programs to read and
..........write files that work pretty well, but Adobe or one of the other
..........programs work well. I use Ieditor.exe from Image Pals 2. It is
..........only a 16 bit program and gobbles up swap file area. I would
.......... recommend that you give it swap space on a second hard
..........drive if you have one. A lot of graphics work can easily use
.......... 200 meg of hard disk space because it does not manage
..........swap files well with Windows 95. I am looking for a Windows
..........95 upgrade on the Web. Otherwise, it is a very capable
..........program with a lot of power, especially if you have your own
.........scanner.
