JavaScript and CGI

Note: There are two javascripts running on this page. They run fine in Netscape 4. If you don't see them, then your browser may not support them.

CGI - Detailed Discussions

What is the difference between Java, JavaScript, and CGI?

The difference between CGI Scripts and JavaScript/Java is that a CGI Script is a separate file which is written in other Languages such Perl, C, C++, etc. and called upon by a an HTML Tag put into the HTML code of the web page in which you want it to appear.
JavaScript is a Code which is written in Java that is put into a HTML File. Java is a Programming Language which isn't that Complex. JavaScripts are the result when someone writes things using Java, and the Script works. They are very simple to create because they aren't that complex.
CGI Scripts are what you create using either Perl, C, C++, Shell, TLC, and other Programming Languages which doesn't include Java. CGI Scripts are much much more complex, and that is why they must be a separate file, and not just included in the HTML File.
Java is becoming more Complex though because people are including so many Codes into one JavaScript that it must be a separate file to keep the Loading of the Pages down.
If you would like any JavaScripts or just are curious then go to
http://www.javascripts.com
If you want some CGI Scripts for your web site then go to
http://www.cgi-resources.com
They both are great sites for what they do.

Why won't my JavaScript run?

If you had to edit your javascript (put you own words in it), and used any word processor which adds "coding" anywhere in the document, it will NOT work. To prevent this inadvertant/automatic change of the JavaScript coding, use only a pure text editor, such as MS NotePad or an HTML editor.

Why won't my JavaScript run in MS Internet Explorer?

JavaScript was developed by Netscape. In Netscape 2.0, JavaScript was version 1.0. In Netscape 3.0, JavaScript was version 1.1.
When MSIE 3.0 was developed, Microsoft did not want to license JavaScript from Netscape so developed their own form called "VBScript". Although MSIE understands both its own VBScript and most JavaScript1.0, it does not perform Javascript1.1.
To make your web page compatible with both Netscape and MSIE, you should use Javascipt1.0 exclusively.
Note: MSIE will perform VBScript AND JavaScript1.0; Netscape does NOT "see" VBScript at all.

What does the following Javascript do?
<script language = "Javascript"> <!-- if (top.location != location) top.location.href = location.href; //--> </script>

This script makes sure you're page is allways on top, if someone loads your page in a frame, then it will burst out of the frames.
it does nothing if your page is allready on top.

Anybody's welcome to copy my set-up process. My ring is the [Ring of Masters - For Ringmaster Only]. The URL is
https://members.tripod.com/~ringmasters/
Mirror site #1 has a Javascript setup (Works in Netscape and IE as far as I know) that displays the person's code exactly as it should be.
Pretty nifty for those people who always forget to change a _#_ to their ID#. So far it's worked great. I've only had 1 ringmaster who had it mess up on him and I told him to go to Mirror Site #2 (Old Ring Code) or retry. BTW: If you wanna jump straight to my JavaScript page that displays the code, it's the above address, then /join2.htm

http://www.javigate.com/Webring/
-- Paul Holden

Paul Holden developed a web ring navigator written in JavaScript called a Javigator. I have it on my webpage at:
http://MARCHMOM.com/Javigator/
if anyone would like to check it out... :-)
The URL for getting Paul's Javigator is

QUIZ FOR WEBSITE
Where can I get a "quiz" to put on my website?

You can get a quizlet from here:
http://www.beseen.com/.
-- Coryn Spiers

A good JavaScript quiz can be found at the JavaScript Source. Here is the URL:
http://javascript.internet.com/miscellaneous/user-quiz.html
I use this quiz on a couple of my sites. The only thing is though that it does not add up your right answers or anything like that. I think you need CGI or similar for that.
