This 1986 volume collects
a large portion of Herriman's Krazy Kat comic strips, which appeared in
newspapers nationwide for 31 years (until he died) as well as a smattering
of his other artwork (158 illustrations, 48 in color). Though the strips
were initially created for humor, critics now see a heavier surrealistic
quality to Herriman's style.

in the direction of the kind of political satire that would make him one
of the greatest cartoonists of all time, and Vol.4 includes an early courtship
between Porkypine and Lady Hepzibah. Vol.9 includes one of those beloved
Christmas sequences, as well as a battery of get-rich-quick schemes.
Each volume includes an informative introduction by comics historian R.C.
Harvey.

POGO transcended the funny
animal strip tradition (as perpetuated by such strips as Bugs Bunny or
Donald Duck). At its core, Kelly's strip was a reincarnation of vaudeville,
and its routines were often laced with humor that derived from pure slapstick.
To that, Kelly added the remarkably fanciful and inventive language of
his characters - a "southern fried" dialect that lent itself readily to
his character's propensity to take things literally and permitted an unblinking
delight in puns.
All this is funny enough,
but Kelly went further in honing the satirical edge of his humor. In the
early 1950's, the double meaning of the puns took on political as well
as social implications, and the vaudeville routines frequently looked suspiciously
like animals imitating people in high government.
