ARDUENGO ANCESTRY
Origins of the Arduengo Name
The origin of the name Arduengo came from a nomadic Gaelic (Celtic) tribe which lived in the Ardennes Forest. During Roman times this forest was called Arduenna. The Arduenna Forest was a part of Gaul. The Gauls occupied the territory that now includes France, Belgium and that part of Germany west of the Rhine. Gaul was invaded by the Goths in the early hundreds AD at which time the tribe migrated over the Pyrenees mountains and settled in the foothills in Northeast Spain, the town was called Cangas De Onis.
When the Moors invaded Spain in 711 AD they conquered most of Spain except the narrow mountainous region across far northern Spain. This region was saved by the folk-hero Lipula. The Virgin of Cononga appeared and instructed him to lure the Moors into a certain ravine in which the tribe was able to defeat the Moors.
This family name changed in Spain from Arduenna to Arduengo.

This is part of an e-mail that I received from a gentleman in Spain please if you have anything to add, or know where I can find out more please let me know.
The name of the folk-hero is not Lipula otherwise Pelayo, hes the personage who appears in the coat of arms of Gijon, my town (the biggest city in Asturias. The name of the Virgin is Covadonga instead of Cononga (similar isnt it?). And the story of the Moors and the defeat is close to the story that I study in my childhood, I learnt that due to the height of the mountains the Moors arrows returned to them and themselves killed them. In Asturias this fact is known as The miracle of Covadongas

Here you will find links to photos of Arduengo's, Haskins,Cimino's, Ramentol's & Echeverria's. Some of them are known to me, many are not. I have included the name that they were listed as in the records & the exact spelling. If you can idenify them please let me know. I found these photos at the USF web site, theses are in a special collections area.  I will include a link here that will take you directly to the Cento Asturiano page that contains the holdings that USF currently has.
The Centro Asturiano was a club in Tampa Fl. It served people who mainly came from Austurias- a mountainous region of Spain. Many people left poverty in Austurias, to find better lives in Cuba. When Cigar factories opened in Tampa, many came, & this club was formed so they could get together & exchange news of home, play dominos, & the club also provided entertainment. My great grandfather Leon Martinez Arduengo was a member of this club. His obit. states that he was one of the founders. I'm sorry to say there were no pictures of him, but there are many of his children. So take a look & see if you recognize anyone
