A tribute to Donald Duck, 70+ and still going strong... |
Donald was born back in 1934, when he had a supporting role in the
movie The Wise Little Hen. He had the modest line "Who, me? Oh,
no! I got a bellyache."
He became very popular by being the most
temperamental individual in Disney's cast and his first leading role came 1937
in Modern Inventions.
From start, i.e. 1934, Donald appeared as a
cartoon in different american papers. The classic episodes are made by Carl
Barks, but that era did not start until 1943.
The swedish weekly
magazine KALLE ANKA & Co (DONALD DUCK & Co in swedish) started
in September 1948. The value of these first editions has increased fairly well.
Back in 1948 the first number cost 60 swedish öre(let us say 10 US
cents to get the proportion) and it was sold at a venerable auctioneer called
Bukowskis in 1989 for 10000 swedish kronor(let us say slightly above
1000 US dollars).
Donald Duck has the record in number of movies made at
Disney, with 174 between 1934 and 1961.
