OPPORTUNITIES OF A GOSPEL MEETING

A gospel meeting is a time where several days are set aside for the
preaching and teaching of the gospel. Some may wonder what are the
advantages of gospel meetings.
  1. Gospel Meetings are opportunities to receive the word which is
able to save our souls. "Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and
superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted
word, which is able to save your souls." (James 1:21). The word
is said to save the soul because it shows us the Savior Jesus
Christ. " And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of
his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are
written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son
of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name."
(John 20:31). The word also shows us how to get into the death of
Christ where he shed his precious blood. "Know ye not, that so many
of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his
death?" (Rom. 6:3). Also the word shows us how to get into the body
of Christ. "For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body,
whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and
have been all made to drink into one Spirit." (I Cor. 12:13). Each
of us need to take advantage to hear the word of God preached so
we can be instructed as to how to reach the blood of Christ and
also how to please Christ with our lives. The Word also teaches
us how to remain in contact with the blood once we reach it. "But
if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship
one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth
us from all sin." (I John 1:7).
  2. Gospel Meetings give us opportunities to grow in grace and knowledge
of the Lord as we are told in 2 Peter 3:18. There are usually six
sermons that are due to be preached in a gospel effort. Surely
something will be said of instruction to each one present for all
the services. We will be uplifted and have our understandings
enlightened by this effort. Be sure not to miss a service.
  3. Gospel meetings are opportunities to help some poor sinners to
know God and obey the gospel of Christ. If people in sin don't
obey the gospel they are in deep trouble, because in 2 Thessalonians
1:7-9 we are told that Christ is coming with his Mighty angels in
flaming fire taking vengeance on those who know not God and obey
not the gospel. So Gospel meetings are rescue sessions trying to
get people out of sin and into Christ where all spiritual blessings
     are found.
  4. Gospel Meetings are opportunities to help erring children of God
to come out of the clutches of sin into which they have backslidden.
"Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual,
restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself,
lest thou also be tempted." (Gal. 6:1). Also, "Brethren, if any of
you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that
he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save
a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins."
(James 5:19,20). What a wonderful thing to do for an erring child
of God. Along with exhorting the alien sinner to believe and be
baptized all gospel preachers also encourage the erring children
of God to Confess their faults (James 5:16), and to repent and
pray for forgiveness (Acts 8:22). Many homes are made happy,
churches made stronger, and heaven better populated because of
Gospel meetings reaching out to people in sin.
  5. Gospel Meetings are opportunities to let our community know that
we care about them and want them to come close to God. "Draw nigh
     to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners;
and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn,
and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to
heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall
lift you up." (James 4:8-10). It is a terrific blessing to the
community when we knock on people's doors and invite them to the
gospel meeting. They can be made closer to God if they will only
get up and go to the gospel meeting with open hearts to learn His
     will.
