HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF WORSHIP

Some people say they get very little out of worship. Every worship
service of the Lord's church is designed for our good and edification.
We need to get the most good possible from those services. "Some go to
church just for the walk, Some go there to laugh and talk. Some go
there to meet a lover, Some go there a fault to cover. Some go there
to doze and nod, but Some go there to worship God." Let's resolve that
we will be in worship to get the most possible from the services.
  1. To get the most out of worship put your best into the worship.
Sing to the best of your ability. Learn better how to sing by trying
to understand some of the rudiments of music. Pray with those leading
the prayers. Carry your Bible and check up on the passages being read
and discussed. Remember the death of Christ as the Lord's Supper is
observed. Give liberally of your means in God's service because where
the treasure is the heart will be also (Mat. 6:19-21). The Lord told
the slaves "Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as unto the Lord, and
not unto men" (Col. 3:23). That principle is good advice to us as the
Lord's servants worshipping the Lord from the heart.
  2. To get the most out of worship we should search the Scriptures
to see if the things taught are so. The Bereans were of this
disposition and as a result many of them believed (Acts 17:11,12). We
have obligations to try the teachers to see if they are teaching the
truth or error (I John 4:1). We need to realize that the Bible is
always right and when anyone goes contrary to it they are the ones
who are wrong.
  3. To get the most out of worship we should lay aside any prejudice
that might be keeping us from accepting the truth. Many have pet
doctrines, or pet sins and if they do not watch it they will blind
themselves to the truth in favor of that which they want to hold or
do in their lives. Open mindedness to the truth should be the goal of
all people. We should always be willing to correct our lives to bring
them in harmony to the will of God. Approach the worship with the
prayer on your lips, "thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
  4. To get the most out of worship we should apply the message of
truth to our own lives. We should ask, "Have I obeyed this truth that
has been presented to me?" To be thrilled by a message especially
designed to change our lives yet not be "pricked in the heart" enough
to make some changes will mean that the message did not find lodging
in good and honest hearts. We must be willing to be put the truth into
practice to be helped by the truth. The same principle holds on the
song service, the prayers, the Lord's Supper and giving.
  5. To get the most out of worship we should use the occasion to
bring others with us so they can learn and do God's will. Jesus said
that one soul is worth more than this whole world in Matthew 16:26.
The great commission teaches us to "Go ye into all the world and
preach the gospel to every creature" (Mk. 16:15). Worship services
are not only to honor God but are teaching experiences where sinners
can learn the truth , obey it, and be saved. In Worship the sinner
is always told to believe, repent, confess Christ, and be baptized
for the remission of sins. Also among the songs sung in worship is an
invitation hymn to encourage the sinner to obey the gospel. In fact
worship is very evangelistic. What an opportunity we all have to bring
someone to worship services! We could be instrumental in seeing a soul
saved from death and a multitude of sins being hidden (James 5:19,20).
  6. To get the most out of worship realize that each service could be
your last chance to worship God and thus prepare yourself to meet God.
"Go to ye that say, Today or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and
continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know
not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a
vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For
that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this,
or that." (James 4:13-15). The worship this Sunday could be the last
time to sing, pray, study, remember Jesus' death, and give. If we knew
that it was how would we engage in these items of worship?
  7. To get the most out of worship prepare ahead of time to get the
most from it. Be in a spiritual frame of mind as you approach the
place of worship at the time of worship. Attend Bible Study if at all
possible and have your lesson prepared ahead of time so that you will
get the most from the lesson studied. Plan ahead so that you will get
there in plenty of time to greet a few people, to take your seat, get
your song book out and be ready to put your most into the services.
Try your best not to be in a frustrated mood as you come to worship.
  8. To get the most out of worship expect the services to be great.
Be in an encouraging mood to try to help others participating to get
the most out of worship. Your attitude should be that it is great to
be here and isn't it wonderful to have someone to lead in these
services. We should want to see souls converted, Christians built up,
and the Lord glorified in the worship services. Approach the worship
with a prayer on your heart that this will be the greatest hour that
I have ever spent on earth. "Lord we come before thee now. At thy feet
we humbly bow. O do not our suit disdain. Lord we seek thee not in
vain."
