Stormy Skies: Anime Controversy
Topic of the Week:
An Analysis of Anime Controversies

This piece of my page will be devoted to the odd little controversies which arise in my twisted brain from time to time. I always have to talk to someone about them and now I feel like sharing these bizarre thoughts with the internet community. The topics will be discussed in an analytical matter and might even be supported with pictures or the occasional quote which will be documented at the bottom of this page for Copyright reference. As always, these pics (noted by underlined words) or quotes could occassionally contain crucial spoiler information about a series. Read the warning below each topic before continuing to avoid running into unwanted surprises.
Be aware, though, this is just my opinion, I may have some facts to back up my arguements, but I don’t have any true intention of forcing my opinions on people. So if there’s something here you do like or don’t agree, feel free to respond. But please don’t flame me. Topic of October
Fanfic Writers and Legitamacy of Parings

Some people think fanfic writers are pretty crazy with all the unusual pairings they come up with different charactes from the customary hetro pairings to of course, the angsty shonen ai. A few of the pairings authors can come up with are indeed a joke and not intented to be taken as much more than that. Others are the author actually thinks make a good couple or good be supported by the series itself. But is there really evidence in the series to support such unique pairings. This month’s topic will explore the concept of the favored pairings of certain anime/manga characters and the possibility of it actually happening according to the evidence in the series.

Week#1
Relationship #1: X
Shirou Kamui, Monou Fuuma, Sakurazukamori Seishriou, & Sumeragi Subaru

All right, to start off with, I’d just like to say that I find it truly incredible how many different ways fanfic writers can combine these three. It’s fun to imagine certain pairings, I guess. But is this a true merit to the rumors? Let’s investigate each case scenario and see what we come up with. To do so, we’ll need to use information from both Tokyo Babylon and X mangas so there’s bound to be SPOILERS. In other words, if you don’t want to know everything crucial about the afore mentioned characters, GO BACK. If you got no problems with that, let’s continue.

Scenario#1: Kamui and Fuuma

First let’s stick with the facts. They obviously were best friends from a very young age and only wish to make each other happy and feel protected. Well, that was Fuuma’s intention before Dark Kamui got hold of him. But are they as close as some fanfic writers like to pretend? The way I see it, Kamui sees Fuuma as his best friend, almost as if he were some kind of older brother. He is willing to do virtually anything to get him back now. And the whole reason he isolated himself from the Monou siblings in the first place is so they wouldn’t get hurt. But I don’t think his feelings for Fuuma go much beyond a long-lasting friendship. He loved Kotori, that was apparent in the manga. He cared for Fuuma too but not in the same way.
Now as for everyone’s favorite sadist, I think the story is a bit different. I actually believe that there is substantial evidence to support the fact that Fuuma sees Kamui as more than just a friend. His little outburst as a child was the premonition of this, much similar to the latter cry of Kotori. “If anyone should ever make you cry, I’ll protect you from him.”(a) Then when Kamui returns to Tokyo, his devotion to his old friend is incredible. First he finds him after the fight with Daisuke and comforts him. Later he spends most of his time, tracking down Kamui and trying to get him to tell him his secret about why he left Tokyo and why he no longer wants to spend time with the Monou family. Fuuma portrays a great deal of physical emotions during these frequent meetings. Hell, he even protected Kamui from Seishirou! Now that’s loyalty! Unfortunately, Kamui was too in love with Kotori to reciprocate his feelings so all that Fuuma is left with is a sort of muted longing.
Anyway, when Fuuma turns into Dark Kamui, I think all of his feelings are metamorphisized into a gross exaggeration of their former selves. In normal terms, Fuuma’s affections for his best friend are turned into evil obsessions. This is where we get the nasty Fuuma who delights in tormenting Kamui with his sick games and of course, the frequent necking. All of Fuuma’s longing is transformed into a hideous passion for torturing his former friend. Cute, huh?

Summary: Evidence shows Fuuma may have actually loved Kamui but Kamui never felt that way toward him.

Scenario#2: Kamui and Subaru

Okay, I admit at first not too many people are crazy over this pairing. Some just can’t stand to see Subaru devoting himself to someone other than his Seishirou-san. But of course, lots of fanfic writers tend to chose this as a quite a plausible pairing? Could is possibly be legitimate?
Let’s take a look at it from our arrogant little Seal’s view first. So Kamui’s just lost his beloved Kotori to his best friend, Fuuma. Distraught, he tries to lose himself in a world of his own dreams. Subaru, feeling sorry for the boy who seems to share his circumstances, enters his dreams and manages to pull him out of his shell. Kamui is of course, genuinely grateful. Subaru appears to understand how he feels right now whereas everyone else is just pretending to know what he’s going through. So Kamui would naturally want to form some sort of friendship.
Later, after Subaru ends up losing his eye while trying to protect him, Kamui blames himself for the loss. He spends all his time with Subaru in the hospital. Eventually Subaru has to tell Sorata to convince Kamui to take care of himself instead of just moping around. He shows more emotions around Subaru than any of the other Seals. Even in the current issue of Asuka, Kamui is seen screaming out Subaru’s name after discovering that he has created a kekkai. So I guess it is safe to say that the leader of the Seals definitely feels something for the Sumeragi. It’s especially strange for him since he’s not sure of his feelings, after being in love with Kotori for so long. With Fuuma gone, Subaru is really the only person he feels he can reach out to.
As for the depressed omnyouji, he’s far too crushed by Seishirou’s betrayal to fully open himself to anyone. He’s probably afraid of any relationships right now. But, besides Seishirou, Kamui is the only person he has reached out after Hokuto died. Yes, one of the reasons behind this is because they share a common bond-they’ve each had someone special to them killed by someone else they cared about. But Subaru also has a deep loyalty to Kamui, facing Fuuma and Seishirou to protect the young Seal. Whenever Kamui is hurt in battle with Fuuma, Subaru is usually there to check on him. He also seems somewhat happy to learn that Kamui has befriended Keiichi. He also seems to show a great deal of affection around the boy.

Summary: Evidence shows that the possibility of Kamui and Subaru harboring feeling for each other is actually fairly good. But Kamui is probably has deeper feelings for Subaru than the Sumeragi has for him since Subaru still appears to be stuck on Seishirou.

Scenario#3:Fuuma and Seishirou

Okay, this is definitely the most bizarre of the pairings. The two delightful little sadists enjoying their ice creams also springs into everyone’s mind at the mention of this two together. So what is the deal with these vicious specimens?
Fuuma, or Dark Kamui as he’s now called, is a total bastard. He doesn’t care for anyone or anything. All he wants to do is torment Kamui. His relationship with Seishirou is all business. He wants the assassin to help him complete the wish of the Dragons of Earth. Sure, they enjoy each other’s company sometimes. What do you expect they’re both jerks who get a kick out of killing people? (Though I respect Seishirou a great deal more than Fuuma.) Yeah they eat ice cream together. I’m guessing they’re just bored. Seishirou could care less about the teenager who thinks he can revolutionize the world. He may be intrigued by the cold nature of Fuuma but that’s about it. He’s just another crazy kid to him. They have not, to date, fought at the same time yet so we don’t know how great their teamwork would be. Pretty much, this is a looong shot. Frankly, I think Fuuma gets on Seishirou’s nerves sometimes.

Summary: Doubtful that a relationship exist. But hey, they’re both ill bastards, they might just get together for a little “fun.” There’s no actual feelings though.

Conclusion:

Fanfic writers love to try their hand at mixing and matching these pairs. But surprisingly enough, the two favored unusual pairings could actually be quite plausible.

This Week’s Challenge
Scenario#4: Subaru and Seishirou

Hell, this doesn’t even need an explanation. We all know that Subaru loves Seishirou. But how does Seishirou feel about him? I think I’ll let someone else have a shot before I give my explanation on this one? Care to give some imput?.
