Pulteney St. Cemetery, Geneva NY

PULTENEY STREET CEMETERY, GENEVA NY

One of the earliest cemeteries in Geneva Ontario Co. NY is the Pulteney Street Cemetery. It is not known what date the plot was set apart for burials but the probability is that it was in 1797. In the summer of 1920 this cemetery was taken over by the school district of the City of Geneva for the purpose of building a new high school. The burials were removed and taken to a location in Glenwood Cemetery and is known as "Pulteney-in-Glenwood". A report of the work discloses that 630 burials were removed of which 130 were unidentified. The following listing was made from tombstones in 1882.

36 Here lies interred the mortal part of James GREEN who was born at Maidenhead New Jersey in January 1774; settled at Canandaigua in 1795 and died at Geneva Sep 1801 after a short illness, in the 27th year of his age. His strong constitution and the vigorous health he usually enjoyed seemed to promise long life. His active disposition and well-informed mind, his high sensibility, pure integrity and generous spirit, would have rendered him through life a useful and respectable member of society. But his sun, when it had not attained its meridian height, went suddenly down, never more to rise in the scenes of time. He is gone into the world of spirits, his brothers by this memorial mourn his death, honor his virtues and cherish his memory.
