Used-Book Stores, favorite and other. 11/10/99. These are alphabetical. Check the yellow pages for a few more. Always check with them for days and hours.

Acres of Books, 240 Long Beach Blvd., Long Beach. Between 3rd and Broadway, enter parking from 3rd. Outside of South Bay but big & worth a trip. Do double check their hours. Over 700,000 books. I like to wear old clothing. Check Book Baron next door, with bigger store in Orange County. Two other used-book stores within blocks. Pack a lunch, and plan to stay all day.

Aviation Books, 1945 PCH, Lomita. Lots of aviation & military books.

Book Again, 5039 Torrance Blvd., Torrance. Newsletter, sales, etc. Their web site is www.bookagain.com. Next sales are 4/9-4/11 & 4/16-4/18/99 with 40% off paperbacks & 50% off hardbacks. 8/7/99 - They changed their hours to: Tuesday thru Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday.

The Cook's Library, 8373 W. Third St, Los Angeles. Outside South Bay, but large selection of new and used? cookbooks and did have used-book sales on the sidewalk once or more a year. Check with them for details. The next sidewalk used book sale is June 12, 1999, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Dave's Olde Book Shop, 350 N Sepulveda Blvd., Manhatten Beach. Between Artesia Blvd & Manhatten Beach Blvd.

Eclectic Collector (never been there), 1116 Hermosa Ave., Hermosa Beach.

Encore Books, 1704 S. Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), Redondo Beach.

Janet Jarvits, Bookseller, 321 N. San Fernando Blvd., Burbank, CA. Out of the South Bay but worth the trip. Several other used book stores within walking distance. Site at www.abebooks.com/home/JJARVITS/. *The 1-book-for-$5 and the 3-books-for-$10 area is history, and I miss it. *It's easier to find free parking with the new parking structure just a half block north, but call for directions.

JB Kennedy Bookseller, 614 Torrance Blvd., Redondo Beach; southeast corner at Camino Real. He was doing his any-book-for-$2-sale on 4/17/99. 4/23 thru 4/26 was the any-book-for-$1-sale. Much of the cat smell is gone.

Old Master Gallery, 15438 S. Hawthorne Blvd., Lawndale. Phone 310-679-2525. It's mostly an antiques store, with a few thousand books, and a few hundred cookbooks, some going back to the 30's and 40's. Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Thur and Sun, but do call to double check. Almost across the street from a Salvation Army, see thrift stores.

Phoenix Books. Moved about 11/98 from PCH to 24411 Hawthorne Blvd, Torrance. That's about two blocks south of PCH on the west side of the street. From Hawthorne Blvd, go west on 244th St, go south at the first alley, and about the third building and parking lot are the place. Their web site is at www.boseent.com. On their book store page, see the "Directions to Bookstore" page for a map. This store is reported to be over twice as big as the last store. *Also, check with them about discussion-group meetings.

Sandpiper, 4665 Torrance Blvd., Torrance. The north west corner at Anza, in the shopping center.

Torrance Book Buddy, 1328 Santori Ave., Torrance. South of Torrance Blvd. in old town. Couple of thrift stores in the area.

*Libraries. Keep an eye on the local libraries. Most if not all have at least one or more used book sales throughout the year. But watch out for "withdrawn" library books. Many are on sale because of missing pages, and I'd like to catch the #%&@!^$s who cut them out.

GONE - Vinegar Hill Books on 6th in San Pedro is gone. Does she have a new address? *The new-book store, just doors away, said she is out of the book-selling business but she still does bookbinding somewhere. *I once told her I thought her book prices were too high. *She did have one of the few cookbooks I've seen of all-squid recipes and another on early TV cook-show hosts.

More as time allows. But, you have to promise not to buy my favorite books. The * marks the newer stuff.

11/10/99 - These are outside the South Bay, but are interesting stores. The Book Baron (used books) with stores in Long Beach, Anahein, and Fullerton has a web site at www.bookbaron.com.
