Yaohan Market, 21515 Western Ave., Torrance. Northwest corner and a few buildings north of Carson St. It's a mall with a supermarket, food court, shops, lots of underground parking, and an occasional free English and Japanese newspaper. The food court has an interesting decor. 5/17/00 Update - The Yaohan group is falling or fell apart and the Little Tokyo store was sold as reported in yesterday's LAT, page C12. The store in Torrance changed its name maybe six months ago, maybe to Mitsuwa.
Pacific Supermarket (was New Meiji Market) South side, 1620 W. Redondo Beach Blvd., between Western Ave. & Normandie Ave. in Gardena. Hard to find, look for a mall behind a wall.
Marukai, south side of Artesia Blvd., west of Western Ave. in Gardena. Look for iron fence. Nonmembers pay an extra 10%.
A-1 Imported Groceries (Italian Market & Deli), 348 8th. St., San Pedro. East of Gaffey. They have sales a few times a year, around the holidays. Check the Wednesday food section in the Daily Breeze. Next sale is 5/26 thru 5/31/99. Good time to try the sausage and romano. Do check with then for the hours; I've even seen them close early.
