8/31.5/02 - "The Romantic Hours," Saturday, 10-11p, KMZT 105.1 FM, weekly, hosted by Mona Golabek, combines written word with music. This was the topic of the 8/25/02 Daily News U section article which I couldn't find on their web site. It was called "Classic Romance," by Andy Meister, from The New York Times. Maybe they couldn't put it on their site cause it was from the Times, but I did waste my time looking for it. Info and links at www.kkgofm.com/romantic_hours_with_mona_golabek.htm. Also, www.wqxr.com/cgi-bin/iowa/cla/article.html?record=199 suggests you can hear it on line and seems to provide a very slow link to the original (above montioned) article and more.

8/31.4/02 - FYI - "New Music Weekend. Releases abound for the holiday. Labor Day weekend is the traditionally considered the unofficial end of the summer — and beginning of the fall. 8/30.12/02 - Labor Day radio on 9/1/02 may be better than expected. There could be some good fill-in hosts, specials, and some best-of shows. I'll be listening, not typing.

8/30.11/02 - Baseball continues. "Radio stations, syndicators and webcasters that rely on baseball for revenue are breathing a huge sigh of relief right now as a baseball strike is diverted and the games play on," says www.newradiostar.com/. Too bad. I'm glad people won't lose money or jobs, but baseball should be for fun only, not money.

8/30.10/02 - "Fewer format changes ahead. Labor Day Weekend used to be a popular time for format changes -- But not this one. 8/30.7/02 - One column missing today. I didn't see Richard Wagoner's Friday column at members.cox.net/rwagoner/ or in the RAVE! paper. Could he be on vacation?

8/30.3/02 - Arbitron posts some rating stats on their site. They didn't used to do this. Note that you can request different age demos. See wargod.arbitron.com/scripts/ndb/fmttrends2.asp. Larry's tip.

8/30.2/02 - "The 16th minute: Mark Fuhrman. The former Los Angeles police detective, known as "the man who let O.J. Simpson go free," now writes bestselling books and hosts a radio talk show. And, "...as of last night the RIAA's official site was still unreachable." Also from www.radioandrecords.com/. This may be related to the RIAA's push on ISP's to block a Chinese music site. See previous Flash.

8/29.8/02 - "Radio Gears Up For Possible Baseball Strike" and "With just one day to go before a planned work stoppage by Major League Baseball players..." says www.radioandrecords.com/. Baseball is for kids, and some of these need a spanking. Get baseball off the radio or on Disney's KDIS (same thing), and open time for better stuff. Keep an eye on any media outlet for updates. More at www.fromthewilderness.com/free/ww3/082802_kpfk.html. Moreover.com's tip.

8/29/02 - Searches in the Los Angeles Downtown News seem to work again. Entering words like radio will get results, but I didn't notice anything new that was of interest to me. PS - Their search stopped working a month or two ago. Try www.downtownnews.com/archive/index.inn.

8/28.10/02 - Headphone replacement news. My poor 99¢ headphones were replaces with "Koss KTX-1," it says on the phones. Much better sound and volume, and they more firmly grip my head. The cord is longer, and I tie it in a knot to keep it out of the way, but a twister would be better. The cord looks like small, speaker wire and should last longer. At Wal*Mart the shelf said maybe $5.99, but they rang for $4.96 plus tax. They come with or without extra ear pads, at the same price? Details and updates at Radio Hardware someday.

8/28.9/02 - CCC search engine finds CCC info: "Search criteria : Market, Format, Call letters, or Frequency." Try www.clearchannel.com/Radio/rad_search.php. Tip from ctcr bb.

8/28.2/02 - "Atlanta: Sean Hannity autographs 600 books in 5 hours (do the math) (read)," says Larry, at www.radiodailynews.com/, and linked above. However, book deals differ. Maybe he got all his money up front, but the contract says he must push his book for free. Or, at the other end, maybe he got nothing up front, and maybe as much as a $1.00 for each book sold. You don't know till you see the contract, especially first books, especially in these times.

8/19/02 - LAT remains unsearchable. A search for their "In the Know" column this morning didn't pin-point it. You'll have to hunt through their Calendar section at www.latimes.com/entertainment/printedition/calendar/ where you'll find three items which, from their titles, don't seem to discuss radio. However, these three items are listed on their list of "Morning Report" columns at www.calendarlive.com/tools/more.jsp?section=%2Fprintedition%2Fcalendar%2Fmreport which today doesn't list any "Morning Report" columns. Don't expect me to find much radio stuff in the LAT (even if they print any) till searches become productive.

8/17.1/02 - John and Ken, mentioned yesterday, will be on vacation for about a week, starting Monday. But, they will return instantly when/if the David Westerfield trial ends.

8/17/02 - The LAT revised their keyword searches or whatever this week, so my old searches on C&C don't work. This was first mentioned in the 8/14.1/02 flash. Here are a few new ones, set to search the whole LAT, but the results from the Calendar section could be the best. However, these search seem not to find stuff before about the last few days??

  • Column - "Around the Dial".
  • Column - "Morning Report" or LAT's list.
  • "radio station".
  • "radio".
  • Column - "In the Know" - looking, maybe Monday.
  • What they call Times Radio News. Older stuff.
  • LAT's TV & Radio section, mostly TV. Do click on 'more TV & Radio.'

8/16.12/02 - Talk KFI is #4, leaving talk KABC in the dust. All-news KNX is only 0.1 behind talk KLSX and both also beat talk KABC. Classical music KMZT-FM beats all-news KFWB-AM. Talk KLAC doubled talk KRLA's numbers, but new KRLA morning show could help. This period's Arbitron numbers are in at www.radioandrecords.com/Subscribers/ratings/homepage.htm, and click on Los Angeles or #2. R&R says, "In Los Angeles, CHR/Rhythmic KPWR moves 4.9-5.0 to strengthen its No. 1 position, while Alternative KROQ jumps 4.3-4.8 to take second. Regional Mexican KSCA dips 4.7-4.4 for third."

8/16.11/02 - Ron Fineman comment, by a reader, concerning the 8/16.2/02 flash. "He's been more and more out of control over the last year. Getting more strident and vicious in expressing his opinions of industry people, particularly women and minorities, as well as his general political opinions. It doesn't affect his general audience, since they don't see the site, but for me, he lost all credibility as a reporter. And you can't just throw around crap and expect to work in the same industry in the same city. Not smart. I hope he learns something from this." From members3.boardhost.com/scgroove/msg/10887.html.

8/16.10/02 - John and Ken website correction. They announce it as www.johnandkenshow.com/, but I did list it as www.johnandken.com/ which also seems to work. Check their site for links to newspapers articles, etc. John and Ken, weekdays, 3-7p, KFI 640 AM - just don't tell anyone you listen.

8/16.9/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. Good stuff tonight.

8/16.2/02 - "Reporter for KNX-AM Fired in Web Site Flap." Part-timer Ron Fineman says he was let go for posting e-mail critical of a producer. Station remains mum. Ron Fineman, a part-time reporter for KNX-AM (1070), was fired Thursday by the news station. He maintains the action stemmed from negative comments he published about a sister Viacom property, KCBS-TV, on his Web site. The site, www.ronfineman.com/ ..." My hot link. More at www.calendarlive.com/tv/lowry/cl-et-lowry16aug16.story. I did read his site for a while after I linked, but it was always about TV, no radio. I even emailed asking for radio. 8/12.8/02 - "Goodbye, My Fancy" was the missing title for the Lux show last night on the KNX Drama Hour per the 8/11.3/02 Flash. A review is found at us.imdb.com/Title?0043595. I didn't locate it with a star search, but a fuzzy title search helped?

8/10.4/02 - My Walkman radio report. My Sony WM-FX281 radio is about eight months old, and it's time for a report. See my initial report dated 12/22/01 and a link to a picture at hardware. The headphones were covered in the 8/7.1/02 Flash.

  • Physically. I never have used the clear plastic protective case that came with the radio, and that was a mistake. The finish is worn off the fronts of the four corners and the markings on the soft buttons are worn off. The band selector AM, FM, TV, and WB markings are almost gone, but it's not a problem since the selected band is indicated on the display. The Preset + and - markings and the Tuning + and - marking are also almost gone. The clear plastic around the display area is scratched, but all is readable.
  • Proformance. I never have received much on the Weather band, not that L.A. has weather. The TV band, channels 2-13, works but not very well. The AM and FM bands are ok for local signals, but I can't receive the more distant stations. Most computers wipeout the AM band, but FM often works. The five AM presets are not enough for L.A. I never have played an audio tape, but that compartment is a handy place to store toothpicks. PS - The TV and perhaps the FM and Weather bands use the headphones as an antenna. Reception on TV, at least, can get better with a headphone extension cord.
  • Battery Life is hard to estimate. I always use the no-name alkalines, about four for a $1, two at a time, and I use the radio every day; anywhere from a few hours a day but often up to about 12 hours or more a day. The batteries always last a week, maybe more like two weeks or more.

8/10.3/02 - FYI - VA - "Radio ads to ask for referendum ''Yes'' votes. If you listen to traffic reports on the radio, you might start hearing the announcers cooing yes, yes, yes." More at www.pilotonline.com/news/nw0810ads.html. Moreover.com's tip.

8/10.12/02 - The Los Angeles Downtown News at www.downtownnews.com/ may have a problem with their search function. I can usually search for radio, and it finds stories. Since about 7/1/02, search doesn't seem to work properly. Who knows?

8/9.11/02 - "Talker Neal Boortz asks: Why should broadcasters swear off ads for a whole day? After all -- nobody's asking newspapers or magazines to cancel all their advertising. Boortz went on a good-sized rant on the subject." Seems someone doesn't want any radio ads on 9/11. From the old insideradio.com, now at www.mstreet.net/.

    8/9.4/02 - Hi-tech stuff in Robert Gonsett's newsletter at www.bext.com/_CGC/, #531, dated 8/7/02.

8/9.3/02 - Salaries and KIIS. A couple of FYIs from laradio.com:

  • "Yearly Paul Harvey makes $10M; Rush Limbaugh makes $31.2M; Howard Stern makes $23M. What did Chick Hearn make?"
  • "Don Imus charges that KIIS/fm cooks their books to be #1"

8/9.2/02 - "KLON Becomes KKJZ on Friday [today]. Radio station KLON-FM (88.1) will change its call letters Friday to KKJZ to better reflect its format of jazz and blues." More at www.calendarlive.com/printedition/calendar/cl-wk-jazz8aug08.story.

8/9.1/02 - "Needling a Nation. Larry Elder, the L.A. talk show host whose libertarian views often provoke his listeners, is taking his message to a larger audience...He jumps to national syndication on Monday after eight years at KABC-AM (790), where he's heard weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m." This was reported a few weeks ago, and it's bad news since L.A. lacks local-focus shows. More at events.calendarlive.com/top/1,1419,L-LATimes-TV-X!ArticleDetail-68603,00.html.

8/9/02 - Richard Wagoner's Friday column isn't on his site or in the RAVE! paper. Maybe he's on vacation.

8/8/02 - Tripod was broken today; I couldn't get into their site editor.

8/7.7/02 - KCRW 89.9 FM returns to top-25 list at number 24 on the www.measurecast.com/ list, but, as we all know, KCRW is not an internet-only station. I tire of their weekly mistakes as, I'm sure, people tire of mine.

8/7.6/02 - "iBiquity Digital Readies TiVo-Like Radio Service. IBOC developer gets Command Audio license. In-band, on-channel digital radio developer iBiquity Digital has obtained an exclusive worldwide license for Command Audio's digital radio assets, including Command's on-demand audio tools. iBiquity says that radio broadcasters will be able to provide listeners with on-demand programming that will operate in much the same way as on-demand television provider TiVo, including such features as pausing content or saving it for later listening." From www.radioandrecords.com. Others says the IBOC radio-broadcast system itself has known problems/objections, but I haven't heard anything about this 'TiVo' stuff.

8/7.5/02 - "ASK THE SCHOOLS CHIEF" was scheduled for today, 10a, on KFWB 980 AM. They just posted it on their site today; a little late. Yesterday's 8/6.4/02 Flash had a warning and the site link concerning this lack of notice.

8/7.4/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. But first:

    8/7.3/02 - Larry King, Mon-Fri, 8-9p, KFWB 980 AM.

  • Tonight - "Alejandro Avila, accused in the murder and kidnapping of 5-year-old Samantha Runnion, was acquitted in 2001 of molesting two 9-year-old girls. The suspect's former fiancée, Beth Veglahn, says her daughter and niece were molested by Avila -- but the jury disagreed. She joins Larry to discuss last year's acquittal and the first-degree murder charges against Avila in the killing of Samantha."

We'll get his thoughts on the trial of David Westerfield, accused of killing 7-year-old Danielle van Dam, and prosecutors' decision to seek the death penalty against Alejandro Avila, charged in the murder of 5-year-old Samantha Runnion."

  • "THE CHICAGO SYMPHONY with guest conductors and soloists. KMZT 105.1 FM, 10 p.m.-mid."

8/7.1/02 - FYI - Headphones. The headphones that came with my Sony radio (see hardware, the 12/22/01 item) lasted about seven months before they opened near the left ear. I do tend to drop headphones. I switched to another pair leftover from an off-brand radio, and they only lasted a few weeks before they opened near the plug. These sounded fuzzy compared to the Sony. Now I'm on a pair from the 99¢ Only Store which sound fuzzy, tinny, low-fi, low volume, and are even poor for voice. Even maximum bass boost doesn't change the sound through the phones. Outside I often at full volume. In the past I didn't like the the 99¢ Only phones cause they mechanically fell apart, but these look like another design, so we'll see how they last. P.S. - These come with a quarter-inch-plug adapter. Point: there are differences between headphones.

8/7/02 - FYI - Pic 'N' Save becomes Big! Lots. Pic 'N' Save, a group of discount stores known for their often dirty, unkept stores, total lack of service, long checkout lines, and often high prices, changes their name to Big! Lots. Some stores have the Big! Lots sign and another that says they were formerly Pic 'N' Save. They were even a step down from Kmart. They'd better change before the 99¢ Only Store group, started by former Pic 'N' Save employees, takes all their business.

8/6.4/02 - "Ask the Mayor" & "Ask the School Chief." KFWB 980 AM hasn't yet posted their 8/02 schedule for these shows, but keep checking Wednesday at 10a. Keep an eye on kfwb.com/inside.asp.

8/5.3/02 - The new morning show, "M&M in the Morning," I heard the first show today. Friday was a try out. Mark does most of the talking, and Larry, for now, just does the news. I want more Larry. They do plan to cover news, topics, have guests, and listener call-ins, but they're still working on the format. Bill Simon, running for CA governor, was on and may be on every week. Mark did drift into happy-talk which puts me to sleep. It's on weekdays, 6-9a, KRLA 870 AM, with Mark Larson and Larry Marino. Check Mark's site at www.marklarson.com/ for previews?, recaps, streaming?, etc. But, Bill Handel on KFI is still about the best in the morning.

KFI and Davis don't play well together which may be why Davis didn't give KFI credit for helping rescue the two girls. And, why didn't the LAT cover this? - but they do have a KFI-related story at www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-media2aug02005054.story?null.

8/2.5/02 - "The Real Reason Why The RIAA Wants To Take Out The Webcasters. So that that the record labels can run Internet Radio THEMSELVES!!! I knew it, they want a monopoly on Internet radio. Even if you don't think it is a monopoly, it still one trade group in control more/less. That being the Record Labels. OK People we have something to go on." Comment on ctcr bb.

  • Thanks for the info, I made minor changes, but let's say Kim looks at computers from the women's point of view, or something. But, remember I don't do internet audio, so I can't verify. Her site is still www.kimkomando.com/.
