Updated January 24, 2000

Hello! Welcome to the new and improved Gr. 4R Webpage. It is my hope to use this page as a means of sharing the many things that we are taking on in fourth grade at Holden Elementary School. Since there is only so much time in the day, this page is not yet complete. More information on other areas of the curriculum is coming soon. Some photos of class activities and samples of student work will be showing up here in the coming weeks too. Bookmark this page (Ctrl-D) and check back often! You can contact me via e-mail by clicking on my name below.

~Chris Reardon, 1/10/2000

Our latest genre theme in literature is FANTASY. Ella Enchanted is the current book that Mr. Reardon is reading aloud to the class each day.

A variation on the Cinderella story, this wonderful book won a Newbery Honor Award in 1999. Click on the cover to read some reviews or for more information.

The literature groups in our class are reading the books below in the first part of January. To learn more about each title, click on the covers. For a copy of the activities that each child is doing in conjunction with the books, click on the link beside the cover.

Gr. 4R AUTHOR OF THE MONTH

The author of the month is Bruce Coville. Mr. Coville has written many terrific books for children, most of which are in the fantasy genre. Click on his photo below to visit his official website.

Technology in the Classroom...

The students in grade four have been working with Mr. Reardon and Mr. Palmer, our computer teacher, in learning the ins and outs of the Hyperstudio multimedia software. Our first project was to work with partners to build a crazy house on the computer, and then link the room cards together with buttons. We added text fields and cut and pasted graphics into the rooms also. It was a fun way to get familiar with the program. Lately, we have been building the template cards that we are going to use in an upcoming research project that will put to work the earth science and physical geography concepts that we have been learning about over the past few months. Check back here for details soon on "Project ImagineNation".

For more information on Hyperstudio software, visit the company's homepage here.

Some examples of what Holden third and fourth graders have done in the past with Hyperstudio can be found on this website, put together by Mr. Palmer.

Parents interested in similar software for their child on their home computer might want to look into Kid Pix. It is very similar to Hyperstudio, and much more affordable for home use.

MATH

The core mathematics program in use in Gr. 4R is Saxon Math. They have some great information at their website, which you can visit by clicking here.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We have been learning about the various types of landform on earth, and bodies of water too. We created picture dictionaries of the terms, and are currently a website that shows some of the landforms and bodies of water we've been studying and where you can find them in the world.

For a very cool website created by fourth graders at the John Ward Elementary School in Newton, Massachusetts, CLICK HERE.

This is another good resource for the study of landforms.
