Lady Blue Bears - CIAA
Champions The Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone College jumped out to an early 12-5
lead over three-time CIAA champion Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University,
and kept the pressure on them long enough to capture their first-ever
conference basketball title in school history. With a possible game-winning 3-point shot by CIAA Player of the Year
Tiffany Moss, BSU (22-5) had to get back on defense. LC (18-10) called a
timeout with 11.8 seconds on the clock. Coming out of the timeout, the ball was passed twice, and then to All-CIAA
team member Erica Deas for a 3-pointer with 7.3 seconds left. The ball went
straight through the net, and Moss took the out-of-bounds pass to race up
court to call a quick timeout for BSU. The Lady Blue Bears had to play defense for one more possession before
they could celebrate. The Lady Bulldogs of BSU went, as everyone could guess,
to their star player, Moss. As the ball sailed off the rim, and the rebound was collected by BSU, the
clock had already struck zero. The celebration then began for the Lady Blue
Bears, their coaching staff, and their fans. This victory by LC marked the school's first-ever basketball championship.
Deas led the scoring for the Lady Blue Bears with 23 points, 21 of which came
in the second half of play. The Lady Bulldogs were led in scoring by Moss,
who finished the contest with 20 pints, five rebounds, three assists, and
three steals. Helping out the Lady Blue Bears were Chanel Edwards with 12 points, and
Julie Tarrance with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Leading by one point at the half, the Lady Bulldogs ran their lead out to
as many as eight points just minutes into the second half of action. BSU, in
the midst of a 7-0 run, seemed to be shutting the door on the Lady Blue Bears
and their hopes of a championship. LC was not quite ready for BSU to get
their hands on their fourth straight CIAA championship just yet. The Lady Blue Bears made a run that most teams would not have been able to
make against the Lady Bulldogs. LC went on a 15-10 run, and tied the contest
at 54. BSU then took the lead again at 56-54, and again at 58-56. The leads would all be for not though as BSU could not close out the
victory. The Lady Blue Bears, behind Deas, captured the 2000 Women's Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament trophy, and some rings in the
future. LC now gets set to head to the NCAA Women's Division II tournament
next week. |
