Toronto - The Waterfront

Toronto - The Waterfront? Toronto is truly a world within a city. Electrifying, dynamic and cosmopolitan, Toronto is home to more than 100 cultures, offering sensational festivals and performances, friendly neighborhoods, and a fantastic urban atmosphere! Toronto is Canada’s largest city, with a population of 2.4 million. (Population of the Greater Toronto Area is 4.4 million.) One-quarter of Canada’s population is located within 160 km (100 mi.) of the city. As the capital of Ontario, Toronto is the seat of government for Canada’s most populous province, and in fact is the industrial and business centre for the country. Toronto is the Huron Indian word for meeting place.

Toronto is the 3rd largest film and television production centre in North America, after New York and Los Angeles. The industry injects about $1 billion Cdn (in direct and spin-off benefits) into the local economy, and employs about 20,000 people. Architecture: The city boasts at least 22 different architectural styles. Ranging from the neoclassic elegance of Union Station and the neo-Gothic campus of the University of Toronto to the modern works of Germany’s Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (Toronto Dominion Centre), Canada’s Arthur Erickson (Roy Thomson Hall) and Finland’s Viljo Revell (Toronto City Hall). For the Record Books: Two buildings stand out on the Toronto skyline: the CN Tower and the Sky Dome. The Tower (“CN” stands for “Canadian National”, one of Canada’s founding railway companies) is the tallest building in the world, standing at 553 m (1815.5”). The adjacent Sky Dome is a multi-purpose entertainment complex, best known as the world’s first stadium with a retractable roof. Yonge Street, Toronto’s main strip, is the longest street in the world at 1,900 km (1,190 mi.). It stretches from Queens Quay in Toronto to Rainy River, Ontario, near James Bay. “Place of Meeting” Toronto is a multicultural mecca, with more than 100 ethnic groups speaking approximately 100 languages. And a very Lively Place with over Over 5,000 restaurants and eateries. We all know Toronto, the home of the Blue Jays, Raptors, CN Tower, and Skydome but there is so much more to Toronto. Though there is much to do and see around Toronto a Place to visit is the Waterfront area of Toronto. Walk along the waterfront parkway. Take a boat ride to the unique Toronto Islands. A helicopter ride over Toronto is must to really experience this city Have lunch a the hottest spot “the Docks” and just walk a few blocks north of Lake Ontario to visit the Skydome, CN Tower and the Crowne Plaza Hotel To uniquely experience Toronto take a boat ride whether by sunlight or moonlight Many of the boats will accommodate wheelchair or disabled passengers. Toronto Islands: The three main islands offer a quaint summer amusement park, paddleboats, and bikes for rent, in-line skating paths, and grass and beaches for picnics. Best of all, there are no cars! Summer cottages from the 1920’s are home for some 250 families, and feature charming English-style gardens. The Islands are a 10-minute ferry ride from the docks located at the foot of Bay St. This is a wonderful spot for wheelchairs and/or electric scooters. Plus a place the whole family can enjoy. Harbourfront: (Queen’s Quay, between Bathurst and Jarvis St. TTC: Union Station, then streetcar southbound) Before 1972, this was a wasteland of warehouses. Now it’s a residential and cultural neighborhood popular year-round. Highlights include specialty shops at Queens Quay Terminal, cultural facilities at Harbourfront Centre, a terrific lakeside walking trail, and the Harbourfront Antique Market. Cruises of the harbour and ferry services run from the waterfront as well.
