Colonial District Scouts Gather More Than 15 Tons of Food for Community Food Shelves

More than a thousand Colonial District Scouts and adult leaders participated in the "Scouting for Food" drive during the first two weekends of November 1998.

Bags and leaflets were distributed during the first weekend. The following Saturday, November 14, Scouts gathered bags filled with cans, boxes, and other non-perishable items and took them to collection points associated with different community food shelves. By the end of the day, more than 15.5 tons of food had been gathered. The impact of this effort was reflected in a thank-you letter from the director of one of the community groups that received the food gathered by the Scouts.

Special commendations go to five Colonial District Scouting units that made special efforts to gather food and help make this district-wide service project a success.

Thanks also go to a number of Colonial District leaders who contributed significant amounts of time to help district Scouts effectively serve the city of Alexandria and eastern Fairfax County.

Plans already are underway for an even bigger and better "Scouting for Food" campaign in early November 1999.
