Perhaps the most surprising statistic concerning East Fife v Hamilton encounters is that prior to season 1958/59 the two sides had met on only six occasions, despite the fact that both clubs had been Scottish League members for the entire period of East Fife's league membership. The main reason for this is that between 1921, when the Fifers entered the Scottish League, until after the Second World War, East Fife were traditionally a Second Division side and only once ventured into the top league during this time. Hamilton, however, were a First Division side from 1906 until they were relegated the season before East Fife won the Second Division championship. The two sides then 'swapped status' and, during the Fifers' halcyon days, the Accies remained in Division Two apart from season 1953/54. The clubs have met regularly on league business since East Fife's relegation from the top league in season 1957/58. There have been no Scottish Cup ties between the sides and their League Cup encounters number only three - two first round section matches in 1976 and a second round tie in 1985. The most memorable match between East Fife and Hamilton, certainly from the Fifers' point of view, was a Division One encounter on 28 August 1984 when Gordon Durie scored all four East Fife goals in a 4-2 victory at Douglas Park.
