East Fife's first meeting with Ayr United was a no scoring league encounter in Ayr on 31 October 1925. Amazingly, it was to be almost fifty years to the day from that first match before the Fifers managed to record a league victory at Somerset Park! On 28 October 1995 a Robert Scott goal gave East Fife maximum points with a 1-0 victory in what turned out to be the Fifers' promotion winning season. East Fife did, however, manage to record two victories at the home of the 'Honest Men' in other competitions during this fifty-year period. On 9 February 1946 a McKeown goal gave the Fifers a 1-0 win in the second round of the 'B' Division League Cup (result not included in above tables) and, on 23 August 1947, a Davie Duncan hat trick coupled with single counters from Charlie Fleming and Henry Morris gave East Fife a convincing 5-2 victory in a League Cup match.

The only other East Fife v Ayr United meeting of any significance was a 1-0 home defeat on 27 April 1974. This was East Fife's last match of the season and, although the result didn't actually relegate the Fifers on the day, second bottom Clyde managed to pick up two points in their outstanding fixtures to send the Methil Men into Division Two.
