East Fife and Berwick Rangers have met regularly on League and
League Cup business since the first league match between the sides in 1958. For the first
Scottish Cup encounter between East Fife and Berwick we must go back to January 1923 when
East Fife beat their non-league opponents 7-1 in front of a 3,500 crowd at Bayview. This
was not, however, the first ever meeting between the sides. On 20 February 1909 East Fife
made the long trip south to play Berwick in the fourth round of the Consolation Cup. The
match finished 2-2 and the following Saturday East Fife won the replay at Bayview by one
goal to nil. The home side were rather disappointed that the gate receipts for the
replayed match had amounted to only £30. The reason for the poor takings was put down to
"the absence of a couple of stretches of wire and two policemen"!
