As you can see from the above tables, head to head analysis of East Fife v Airdrie matches in the three main competitions shows that the clubs are absoultely equal, not just in match wins against each other, but also with goals scored! The only other East Fife v Airdrie matches ever played were the two sectional games in the Spring Cup in March 1976. In the first game at Bayview on 13 March, East Fife won convincingly 3-0 with goals from O'Connor, Hegarty and an own goal from March. In the return match at Broomfield a fortnight later Airdrie won 1-0, which brings the grand total to 26 wins each with East Fife having scored 121 goals to Airdrie's 119.

As for matches of significance played between the sides, the only encounter which falls into this category as far as East Fife are concerned is the Scottish Cup tie at Broomfield on 22 January 1938 which East Fife won 2-1 on their way to lifting the trophy. From Airdrie's point of view the most significant meeting is probably the 0-0 draw  at Bayview on 3 May 1997 which saw the 'Diamonds' qualify for a Premier League promotion play-off place.

The club fell into severe financial difficulties due to the debt incurred building their 10,000 capacity 'Shyberry Excelsior Stadium'. At the end of the 2001/02 season, failure to win promotion to the Scottish Premier League proved to be the final nail in the Airdrieonians coffin and the club was wound up.

The 'Diamonds' place in the Scottish League was taken by Gretna, although a strong bid was made for league membership by the newly formed Airdrie United at the same time. In order to keep league football alive in the town, Airdrie United bought over the financially struggling Clydebank and were automatically elected to the Second Division. Airdrie United now play in the stadium left vacant by Airdrieonians.
