There were many matches between East Fife and Dundee's second eleven in the Northern and Central Leagues in East Fife's early days before the First World War. In 1917, Dundee were asked to drop out of the Scottish League due to wartime travelling difficulties as the majority of teams in the league were from the west, so the club joined the Eastern League for the remainder of the War. This brought about the first match between East Fife and Dundee's first team, a 5-2 victory for the Fifers on 17 November 1917 at Bayview. The two sides met again in Penman Cup ties during the 1920's before their first Scottish League meeting - a Division One match at Bayview on 16 August 1930 which finished 2-1 in favour of the visitors.
On 9 February 1966 East Fife met Dundee at Dens Park in the first round of the Scottish Cup. The first meeting between the sides in the competition ended in disaster for the Fifers as Dundee won the match 9-1 to equal East Fife's record goals conceded in a single game. Dundee are also responsible for inflicting the Fifers' biggest home defeat of 7-1, a record which they share with Montrose.
The most significant match between the sides is probably Dundee's 2-1 league win on 30 April 1958 which, along with Airdrie's 2-1 win over Queen of the South on the same day, sent East Fife tumbling into Division Two. The Fifers' relegation brought an end to the most successful period in their history and started the slow demise of East Fife as one of Scotland's best and most respected football clubs.
