The 1937/38 season will be remembered mainly for East Fife's Scottish Cup run which ended with the Second Division side winning the trophy at Hampden on 27 April 1938. There was, however, one other momentous occasion in the club's history that same season - their record victory in a competitive match. On 11 December 1937 Edinburgh City visited Bayview for a Second Division encounter and found themselves on the receiving end of a 13-2 thrashing. There were only 1,500 spectators (less than half the usual home crowd) at Bayview that day to witness the event, the wintry conditions having kept most of the East Fife faithful indoors. City started the match the better side and created a couple of good chances before the Fifers stepped up a gear and established a 3-0 lead through goals from Cowan, Henderson and McLeod. City pulled two goals back through Carruthers before the interval. In the second half East Fife went further ahead through an own goal then ran riot with further goals from Adams (3), McLeod (2), Sneddon (2), McCartney (2).

An amateur side founded in 1926, Edinburgh City were admitted to the Scottish League in 1931 and played their home games initially at Marine Gardens before moving to Powderhall. In 1937 the club moved to City Park, just off Ferry Road, before ceasing operations in 1939 due to the outbreak of the Second World War.

When hostilities ceased, the club were re-admitted to the Scottish League and played in the 'C' Division for three seasons along with other smaller clubs and the reserve teams of the First Division sides. In 1949 Edinburgh City joined the junior ranks and by 1955 the club had ceased to exist. They re-formed in 1986 and now play in the East of Scotland League.
