The first league match between East Fife and Elgin City was on 16 September 2000, when the two sides shared the league points in a Division Three match at Bayview Stadium. East Fife's first competitive match at City's Borough Briggs ground was a 3-1 league victory on 18 November 2000. The two sides' first competitive encounter came many years before City were admitted to the Scottish League, however, in a Scottish Cup Second Preliminary Round tie at Bayview on 22 January 1966, where a crowd of 2,855 saw Thoms score the only goal of the game. The Fifers' prize for beating the Borough Briggs boys was a First Round proper tie away to Dundee, where they were soundly thrashed 9-1! The two sides have met on only one non-competitive occasion - a friendly pre-season encounter at Borough Briggs in August 1966 which East Fife won 3-0 with goals from Gerrard (own goal), Christie and Miller.
