On 21 January 1939, a 'disappointing' crowd of 4,300 turned up at Bayview to see holders East Fife begin their defence of the Scottish Cup against Montrose. The reason for the poor crowd was put down to the fact that there were two other attractive Scottish Cup fixtures being played in Fife on the same day. Raith Rovers were playing host to Rangers in Kirkcaldy and, a few miles further up the coast, Burntisland Shipyard were at home to Celtic. The spectators who opted to watch the 'Old Firm' matches probably did the right thing as East Fife lost 2-1 to the unfancied 'Gable Endies' in a disappointing match and their hold on the Scottish football's greatest prize was surrendered at the first hurdle. Incidentally, Rangers triumphed 1-0 at Starks Park and Celtic won 8-3 in Burntisland.
Montrose are also responsible for inflicting one of East Fife's record home defeats. Former East Fife favourite Bertie Miller was in the 'Gable Endies' side which triumphed 7-1 at Bayview on 7 February 1976. Montrose were still in with an outside chance of promotion to the Premier League at the time of this match and desperately needed to improve their goal difference. The Fifers other 7-1 home defeat was at the hands of Dundee on 17 December 1996.
One East Fife v Montrose match is worthy of note for a very unusual reason. The Fifers were forced to field their second eleven for a Northern League encounter between the sides on 13 April 1907 at Bayview as the first team were contesting a Penman Cup tie against Kings Park in Stirling on the same day!
