East Fife's record against Hibs has not been too impressive over the years. The fact that the Methil Men have only recorded four league victories over the Edinburgh side seems quite remarkable at first glance considering East Fife's league form during the 1950's. Closer analysis, however, reveals that despite finishing twice in third place and twice in fourth place, East Fife have never managed to finish their league campaign in a higher position than the Easter Road side. Things might have been quite different, however, if East Fife's league record agaist Hibs wasn't so poor. In fact, if East Fife hadn't lost both their league matches against Hibs in season 1952/53, the League Championship flag could well have been flying above Bayview at the end of that campaign! The most memorable East Fife victory over Hibernian came in the third round of the Scottish Cup on Tuesday 31 January 1984. After having appeared on BBC TV's 'Sportscene' in a no scoring draw at Easter Road on the previous Saturday, Premier League Hibs came to Methil for the replay confident of beating Second Division East Fife and progressing to the fourth round. The home side had other ideas. Tom McCafferty gave the Fifers a deserved half time lead and, in the second half, Steve Kirk rose above the visitors' defence to head home the second, making the final score 2-0. This was the first time a Second Division side had knocked a Premier League side out of the Scottish Cup - a record which was not broken until Livingston beat Aberdeen at Pittodrie fifteen years later!
