East Fife's last major trophy win was the League Cup in season 1953/54 when they beat Partick Thistle 3-2 in the Final at Hampden on 24 October 1953. Gardiner, Fleming and Christie were on the mark for the Fifers as they lifted the trophy for the third time in their history in front of a crowd of 88,529. East Fife's team that day was: Curran; Emery and S.Stewart; Christie, Finlay and McLennan; J.Stewart, Fleming, Bonthrone, Gardiner and Matthew.
The two sides didn't meet on league business until 6 September 1930, when Thistle inflicted a humiliating 8-0 defeat on the Fifers in front of 14,000 at Firhill. There had, however, been four meetings between the clubs (including three Scottish Cup ties) prior to this first league encounter. The first ever match between the sides was on 22 April 1905 when Partick played a friendly against East Fife in Methil as part of a transfer agreement. The Fifers won this inaugural meeting 3-1. The first competitive match came almost fifteen years later on 7 February 1920 when Thistle scored five goals without reply at Firhill in a Scottish Cup second round tie. On 27 March 1927 East Fife and Partick met again in the Scottish Cup - this time in the Semi Final at Tynecastle. No-one gave Second Division East Fife any chance of overcoming their First Division opponents, but after 90 minutes play the referee blew for time up with the score standing at 2-1 in favour of the Methil men. The Fifers' goals came from 'Pasha' Patterson and Jock Wood. On hearing the final whistle, 'Scores of men dodged the police and invaded the pitch to hug the East Fife players' according to the match report in the 'Leven Advertiser'. The Fifers lost the final 3-1 to Celtic. On 1 April 1950 the two sides met again in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Ibrox, but this time high flying East Fife started the match as favourites. In a repeat of the 1927 score line, goals from Charlie Fleming and Henry Morris secured a place in the final, where the Fifers lost 3-0 to Rangers.
