The first ever meeting between East Fife and Queen of the South was in the Semi Final of the Qualifying Cup played at Bayview on 4 December 1920, where a crowd of 8,000 saw the Fifers progress to the Final with a 2-0 victory. On a day 'perfect for football', Dom Currie opened the scoring midway through the first half with a powerful left foot drive and Andrew Moffat headed home number two just before the interval. East Fife went on to win the trophy two weeks later with a 3-1 victory over Bo'ness at the neutral venue of Central Park, Cowdenbeath, in front of over 20,000 spectators.
Two of East Fife's greatest players of all time, Henry Morris and Charlie Fleming, both played their last matches for the Fifers in games against the 'Doonhamers'. On 2 February 1952 Henry Morris made his last appearance for the first eleven in a 5-0 league victory at Bayview and on 3 January 1955 'Cannonball Fleming', who had scored a hat-trick against Queens in the previous meeting between the clubs, said farewell to Bayview after a 1-0 home defeat.
One other East Fife v Queen of the South match worth a mention is the 3-0 defeat at Palmerston in the Semi-Final of the St Mungo Cup (part of the 'Festival of Britain' celebrations) on 14 July 1951. Defeat in this match denied the Fifers a Cup Final 'derby' against Raith Rovers at Celtic Park.
