Hand-Made Planes Make Smooth Sailing in Transition from Hobby to Business
By David Yawn

Bobby Smith has turned a hobby into a part-time vocation.

As owner of Custom wings, he crafts vintage and modern airplanes out of rolled form aluminum.
All are hand made.
"I try to go by squadron colors and make them as authentic as I can get them, using books and general information I can gather," he says. "I may run into someone who was with a certain squadron and get more details; I research every project."
"I've had a real interest in aircraft and have built models for a long time," Smith says. "At first, I was giving them away to the neighbor's kids and they really liked them. It got to the point where people were starting to buy them. I sell everything I make now."
The planes run from about $10 for a small novelty type to $65-$85 for larger models that are motorized via non-flying propellers that operate on AA batteries.
The highest demand seems to be for military types, with the Memphis Belle version of the B-17 being the favorite, he says. Custom Wings does make passenger planes, also.
The business began in 1985.
It recently did an exhibit for the 8th Air Force reunion and it stages metal crafting and hobbyist shows.
"I've won a lot of ribbons in the last three or four years at the Mid-South Fair," he says.
Smith makes the planes out of his home in the Berclair area of town. His wife, Blount, markets them.
"I have about 25-30 planes on order to build before Christmas," he says.
