Woodturning
Tips & Tricks
from the
Canadian Woodturners Association

Revised  Dec.  26, 1999

Most turners run their lathes too fast.
If the shavings hitting your hand feel hot, the RPM is set too high and will only result in a poor cut and premature dulling of your tool edge.

Power cords on electric hand tools are a nuisance; they need to be wrapped up in storage, get snarled with cords from other tools, and are mostly either too long and get in the way, or too short to get from the outlet to the work.
Consider cutting your cords off to a length of 12" and reinstalling the plug. With an appropriate extension cord which you probably used anyway you can reach your work no problem and all the hassles of dealing with the cord are gone.
