Acknowlegements/Disclaimer: Ok the song belongs to Pink Floyd and is called Learning to Fly, all characters belong to Marvel, this is making me no profit.

Free at last

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a wind swept field
standing alone my senses reeled.
A fatal attraction that's holding me fast,
how can I escape it's irresistible grasp.

People watched and waited, all round the world there was a silence as the leaders of each country met in a room in Washington DC.

The purpose of the meeting was to vote on a bill for mutant rights that would become international law, to declare peace between human and mutant at last.

Can't keep my eyes from the circling sky
Tongue tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

All around the world there was a feeling of hope and joy, few and far between were those that wished the gathering ill; few and far between were those that wished all mutants dead.

Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything.
No navigator to guide my way home
unladened, empty and turned to stone.

Across the world in another place the X-men fought the remaining remnants of mans evil, the Sentinels.

A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eye's from the circling skies
Tongue tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

The X-men had been given warning that the Sentinels would attack the conference in hopes of stopping the vote.

And now they fought for peace, they fought for freedom.

Above the ground on a wing and a prayer
my grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
across the clouds I see my shadow fly
out of the corner of my watering eye
a dream unthreatened by the morning light
could blow this soul right through the roof
of the night.

The battle raged; but no battle could last forever and as the doors in Washington opened to reveal Professor Xavier, the sun glinted on the bill for mutant rights he held in his hand and half a world away the last of the X-men won their fight for freedom.

There's no sensation to compare with this,
suspended animation,a state of bliss
Can't keep my mind from the circling sky,
tongue tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Wolverine grabbed Jubilee in a bear hug and the rest of Generation-X and the X-men gathered around them, they had just heard the news. No longer would mutants have to hide their gifts, no longer would they be hounded by Sentinels and as the sun rose sweeping away the shadows of night they knew that today was truly the first day of their freedom.
