Red Bricks, Blue Water

Penance Emerges

City borders ocean, red bricks on blue water,
Dams are protection, high walls, solid earth.
Inside city safe from storms, never ending;
Outside somewhere else, red-brick makes her whole.

Inside brick walls, city is alive,
Movement like thoughts along busy streets.
But water sees nothing but walls, never moving,
Silent facade from danger conceived.

Ocean bombards, emotions on concrete,
Pounding away at unfriendly restraints.
Until one little finger, trickling through wilderness,
Breaks through small crack in red-brick defence.

Ocean floods city, red bricks in blue water,
Dams no protection from whirlpools outside.
City is damaged, self unpreserving,
Outside and inside now forced into one.
