1.Outside is supposed to be the first album of a cycle. But with the two CDs coming, it seems that we have to forget the cycle. The second album would have been called 2.Contamination and was supposed to be realized by mail, that means that Brian Eno and David Bowie would exchange recordings by mail. The theme of the album was the great epidemic (like the Ebola virus) and the 17th century. Sounded interesting... But it seems that we'll never hear that album. Rumours also said that the third album would be called 3.Afrikaan. So, continue to pray for the following....

1.Outside was followed by a tour, the first one for Bowie since Tin Machine. In America, Nine Inch Nails accompanied him and in Europe, Morrisey was doing the first part. NIN has since worked with Bowie in the The Hearts Filthy Lesson and I'm Afraid of Americans remix and the video for IAOA. During the tour, Bowie and NIN played four songs together, like Bowie's Subterraneans, Hallo Spaceboy and Scary Monsters and NIN's Hurt and Reptile.

A play is supposed to be done on the 1.Outside story for the Salzburg festival in 2000 with Robert Wilson as the director. Bowie and Eno are both implicated in this project.

When all the albums of the cycle will be released, an album is supposed to be released. It will be called Inside and will be constituted of songs from the sessions. Including the original improvisated versions of the segue…

We already know three songs from the 1.Outside sessions. The first one is Get Real, bonus track on the japanese version of 1.Outside. On the american version of The Hearts Filthy Lesson, there was the song Nothing To Be Desired. Finally, the first version of I'm Afraid of Americans, originally titled Dummy, appeared on the Showgirls soundtrack before it reappears on Earthling. It has been remixed by Nine Inch Nails and Photek on its single.

The song Strangers When We Meet that finishes the album is a new version of a song from The Buddha of Suburbia soundtrack. The song Outside was written as an adaptation of Now, Tin Machine song that was a development of the 1988 version of Look Back In Anger.
