THE HOLLY KING

November: The Wheel of the Year begins anew once more, December The Holly-King dies, and the Oak-King is born. The Holly King and the Oak King battle for the hand of the Goddess at both Winter and Summer Solstice. The Holly King wins at Midsummer and rules over the waning year; the Oak King wins at Winter Solstice and rules the waxing year.    In the winter battle between the Oak King and Holly King the old sun dies so that the new sun can be reborn. According to the Bardic Tradition, the winter solstice was called 'Alban Arthan' by the Druids. It was then that the Chief Druid cut the sacred mistletoe from the Oak,wich we can still see with the use of mistletoe for Christmas decoration
