Jason (John) Hinds
My family moved from Beaver County, PA into Jennings County, IN in the late 1830s. My great great grandfather moved to Northwest, IN and died in Remington in the late 1860s. His name was John or Jason.

Jason married M. Catherine Oldham in 1839 in Jennings County, IN and later moved to Northwest Indiana [Jasper / White County area]. He and Catherine had several children, including Van Buren, Roark [Ruark /Rouark], George, and Wesley. Catherine died in 1855 and Jason married again and had children by that marriage as well.

Jason married again a couple of years later. Jason Himes (Hinds) married Naomi Dawson in White County, IN on 29 Aug 1857. James Hudson, Minister.

Van Buren was my great grandfather. He served in the 20th Indiana Infantry and was captured aboard the screw steamer 'Fanny' in Pamlico Sound in October 1861. He was sent to Libby Prison and was exchanged in May 1862. He later served in the 54th Indiana [first 3 months as George Hinds because of the oath he gave to not pick up arms again - required at all prisoner exchange.]. He then enlisted under his real name Van B Hinds and served through the seige of Vicksburg [One year enlistment]. He told the story that when he was going home on furlough that his train was stopped in Ohio by Federal Officials. Robert E. Lee's troops were spreading panic North of the Mason Dixon Line. He was removed from the train and arrived just in time to see action at Gettysburg. He said that he fought in the area below the little round hill at the wheatfield. I was unable to confirm his presence, but I do know that his old unit, the 20th Indiana was there. Maybe he fought with his old comrades in arms. He is on record again in March of 1864. He joined the 48th Indiana Infantry. In April he joined his unit at Huntsville, AL. After a stint of protecting the railroad while the Atlanta campaign took place, his unit joined Sherman's forces at Cartersville and served during Sherman's march to the sea and up through the Carolina's. He was discharged in July 1865.

I have the following information on Van's brother, Roark. He served in the 26th Indiana Infantry before going home with disability in March 1864.
