First Bit of Advice - Keeping the proper level of Cynicism

When talking to a prospective Johnson a proper level of Cynicism should be maintained. As they discuss the run, and the payments, remind yourself of the following three things:
  1. They aren't telling you everything.
  2. They're lying.
  3. They're going to sell you out.
For example:
  1. A Johnson offers you way too much money. This means that:
    • They aren't telling you everything
Nobody hands out lots of NuYen in the spirit of good will
    • They're setting you up.
(which is close enough to rule #3 that its included.)
    • You should make sure your insurance and Doc Wagon services are up to date.
  2. A Johnson offers you way too little money. This means that:
    • They aren't telling you everything
Because they obviously don't know everything.
    • They're setting you up.
(Although to be fair, they probably don't know it.)
    • You should make sure your insurance, Doc Wagon and next of kin are notified.
  3. A fixer offers you a job that's good for 'a few quick NuYen.' This means that:
    • They aren't telling you everything.
    • They're lying.
    • They probably won't sell you out without a good reason
Its hard to collect your fees when the poor slots are dead.
  4. A fixer offers to get you the supplies you need. This means that:
    • They aren't telling you everything.
Like the fact that they're getting kickbacks on the equipment.
    • They will be lying to you
      (about the price)
    • They're going to set you up with the cheapest stuff they've got.
This is the first step in developing a healthy level of Cynicism.
(and you should be telling yourself three things right now...)
  1. I'm lying
  2. I'm not telling you everything
  3. I'm probably setting you up.
Have a nice day!

Second Bit of Advice - Keeping the proper level of Cynicism (for Johnsons)

When you're talking to a group of potential 'employees'. It is important to keep in mind the following information.

First:If you're talking to experienced Shadowrunners, they know three things:

  1. You're lying.
  2. You aren't telling them everything
  3. You'll mostly likely set them up.
Second: If you're talking to a group of inexperienced Shadowrunners, or worse, a fixer:
  1. They're lying
  2. They aren't telling you everything
  3. They'll most likely sell you out.
At least there's symmetry. Good night!
