Diagnosis: Smallpox (Variola)

In addition to the cytoplasmic Guarnieri bodies,
intranuclear inclusions are also illustrated on page 1

The images for this case were photographed from a slide
provided by my colleague, Dr. Dirk Elston.

Dr. Elston is a dermatologist and dermatopathologist,
who, recently retired from active duty in the
U.S. Army, after a career of 20 years.

Throughout his military career, he practiced both dermatology
and dermatopathology and retired as Chief of Dermatology
at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX.

Dr. Elston acquired this slide as a teaching case while serving
in the Army.

Dr. Elston is an excellent clinician, dermatopathologist,
clinical investigator and teacher and we are very fortunate
to have him as a member of our staff in our Departments of
Dermatology and Pathology.
