THE CANEY FORK FRANKS FAMILY OF TENNESSEE
A large colony of Franks settled near the Caney Fork River
which is located near the county line between White and Warren
Counties. Most of these Franks were born in North Carolina,
South Carolina or Georgia. One or two were born in Tennessee,
probably in East Tennessee. They began arriving in the Caney
Fork area in the early 1800's and by the 1820's, most were
beginning to sell their land and move to Marion County,
Alabama, where Chickasaw land was beginning to be settled by
white settlers. A few years later, more Chickasaw land was
opened up across the state line in Itawamba County, Mississippi
and many of the Franks of Marion County moved to Itawamba
County, often moving back and forth between the two
neighboring counties. There are still several Franks families
living in these two counties today.
This is an attempt to compile the scant record that these men and
women left as they moved with the frontier. It is a working
document and includes both factual information (census, land,
marriage and cemetery data) and speculation.
If readers respond to this document with corrections, additions or
new speculations, I will issue it periodically to the group. Dick

I have included all Franks men who left a written record in White
or Warren Counties, Tennessee or who were heads of household
in the 1830, 1840 or 1850 Marion County Alabama or Itawamba
County, Mississippi censuses.
The Franks men are listed in alphabetical order. At the end, I
have listed a few Franks women, but data on the women is very
sparse. Use your browser to search for an individual.

**1830 Census. Charles would be 36-55 and his wife would be
26-36. There is a Charles Franks in Marion, AL but he is
younger, at age 20-30 and there is a son 15-20 who was not in
the 1820 census, 00011-00101. See Charles #2 below.
**1840 Census. Charles would be 46-65 and his wife would be
36-46. There is a Charles Franks in Itawamba, MS but he is
younger, at age 20-30. See Charles #3 below.
**1850 Census. Charles would be 56-75 and his wife would be
46-56. There is a family that matches this description in Marion
County: Charles 56 NC, Nancy 50 SC, Tabitha 20 AL, William
C. 15 AL, John 14 AL, Caroline 11 AL.

ELIJAH FRANKS #1
This Elijah Franks probably never appeared on a White County
Tax List. He was drafted during the war of 1812 probably in
1814 and died in New Orleans in 1815. His son Josephus was
born about 1814 and filed for Elijah's Bounty Land rights as his
only heir. This was in 1855 in Pontotoc County, MS when
Josephus was 41. Assuming Elijah was 20 when he was drafted,
his birth year would have been 1794. He could have been as
young as 18 based on the age of other draftees. However, Verna
Ashley reported that Elijah was a peace officer "a few years
before his death".

ELIJAH FRANKS born 1790 in North Carolina lived next door to JOSHUA GANN
born 1790 in Tennessee in 1850 Marion County, Alabama. He was by occupation
a blacksmith. His wife, NANCY, was born 1796 in North Carolina. One son,
PETER born 1824, his second son, MICHAEL V. born 1825 in Alabama. Marion
County and Itawamba County, Mississippi join each other at the border
between the two states. MARY GANN-FRANKS marriages appear in the records of
Itawamba County, Mississippi.

It is possible that Elisha Franks (b ca 1800) is the younger man
(age 20-30) in this census. An Elisha Franks appears on the
White, TN tax lists of 1822 and 1823. Elisha Franks (age 30-40)
is in the 1840 Census. Elisha (age 50 NC) is in the 1850 Census.
I do not have a record after 1850.

There are a set of books, WARREN COUNTY TENNESSEE PLAT BOOK 1, 2, 3, 4 (Nona
Williams, R.O.F.E. Publications, PO Box 3793, Santa Cruz, CA 95063-3793).
Of these, books 3 and 4 are negative for FRANKS, though I think that "Franks
Ferry Road" still appears in one of them.

Notes from V. Ashley:
ELISHA FRANKS appears in the White County records as a workman off the road
on 21 of October 1822. Other's assigned to the crew were JOHN and ELIJAH
FRANKS. They were to work from FRANKS Ferry Road to Rock Island. On 25
November 1822 when BURRELL MANNING sold LEWIS FRANKS 3 3/4 acres of land on
the Caney Fork listed as running down the river South 85 degrees West 60
poles. ELISHA DENTON FRANKS and ELIJAH FRANKS were his witnesses.
*** New Information DNA DATA proves that Jeremiah Franks (1791) and Elisha Franks (1800) are brothers.

Frederick Franks, the oldest son of Jacob Frank and Susannah
Roan. If I'm not mistaken, Frederick last appears in the tax
records of Cabarrus or Rowan County, North Carolina in 1804.
So he probably started his westward movement about that time.
He can be found in Hardin County, Tennessee after 1812. I
believe the Jacob Franks found on the 1820 Bedford County,
Tennessee census is his brother who also later appears in Hardin
County. If one looks at the old records of Bedford County they
show many of the early settlers came from Rowan, Mecklenburg
and Cabarrus Counties, North Carolina."

(Selling). However, part of their group's numbers were already
in Tennessee by 1800 (of record) and possibly before that. The
Greenville deeds use "Jacob Sr and plain Jacob. Its a matter of
deduction that Jacob Sr. would be the father of the
Cumberland-Wake County Franks and that Henry was a son
among others."

Henry Franks was exempted from paying a poll tax in 1812-1820
Court Minutes Book. Assuming this was in 1812 about the time
that Henry arrived in White County, his birth year would have
been 1772 or earlier.
From Verna Ashley: "Henry had a drinking problem and the
church admonished his wife Nancy to do something about it.
Lemuel was a deacon or something. Finally, Henry and Nancy
were both dismissed."
From Verna Ashley: "Henry Franks in 1814 or 1815 took into
his home a Benton orphan and promised to teach him to read an
write, etc. This tells me that a daughter or his wife was a
Benton."
1830 Census: I did not find Henry in the 1830 census of White
County or Marion Co, AL. I have always assumed that Henry
died before the Franks migration from Middle Tennessee to
Marion, AL and Itawamba, MS or at least before the census was
taken. A Henry Franks age 60-70-000010001-000100001 does
appear in the 1830 St. Francis, AR census, but his wife is older
than the wife shown in the 1820 census would have been.
A Henry Franks is listed on the tax list of Izard County, AR in
1844 and 1845.. Other familiar names on those lists were
Lemuel and Jacob plus Samuel and Thomas. were on the 1843
list. Lemuel born 1785 GA bought or received land from a
Henry Franks in White County, TN in 1818.

Dick,
My name is Larry Webb from Mississippi. You can find Henry Franks in the
1830 and 1840 census of Tuscaloosa County, AL. Henry and several other
families including Jesse Webb and Ezekiel Elledge migrated from White
County, TN in the early 1820's to Tuscaloosa County, AL. They owned land in
both Tuscaloosa and Pickens counties. All these families seemed to have been
very close as they usually settled next to each other. Henry Franks was
murdered on July 17, 1841 by Stephen Elledge according to an article in an
early Alabama newspaper. The Governor of Alabama issued a reward for Stephen
Elledge who was said to be about 40 years old. Stephen was probably a
brother to Ezekiel Elledge and had likely come from White County as well.

Notes from V. Ashley:
HENRY FRANKS lived in the Horseshoe Bend and was a poll tax payer in 1812.
He asked the county to excuse him from paying taxes in the year of 1813.
Exceptions were granted to older persons usually by age 50. HENRY was most
likely the eldest of these eight men. JAMES BENTON was bound to HENRY for a
bond of $400 in 1815. He was to be taught to read the sacred scriptures and
to write a legible hand and upon arriving at age 21 years give him one horse
and saddle not under the value of $80 and a suit of clothes exclusive of his
wearing apparel.
The land which HENRY owned was sold to LEMUEL FRANKS for $40 for the 20
acres in October 1818. Persons who witnessed this transaction were WILLIAM
LAWRENCE and EZEKIAL ELLEDGE who lived in Warren County, TN. HENRY and his
wife, NANCY, later appear in the Primative Baptist Church records of the
Caney Fork District, Warren County, Tennessee in the early 1820's.

Jacob is over 45 (70-80) and his wife is 26-45 (45-50). There
are 7 children in the household under 16.
1830 Marion Co, AL Census (01120010001-1100201) Jacob #1
is now age 80-90 and his wife is age 45-50). There also is a man
age 40-50 in the household and two women 20-30. The three
"sons" in the 1820 census are now in the 10-15 and 15-20 age
brackets.
White Co, TN, 17 Feb 1831, Jacob Franks to William Fisher, ?,
$225, signed Jacob x Franks and Joseph x Clark, agent for Jacob
Franks, witnesses Wilson Upchurch and Daniel Walling.
1840 Itawamba County Census (000110010001-100010001)
Jacob has moved to Itawamba, MS and is age 90-100 and his
wife is 60-70. There is also an adult man in his household age
40-50. If this man were married, his wife would be the age
20-30 woman in the household.
1850 Census. Jacob probably died before 1850. The man in his
1840 household would now be 50-60 (probably closer to 60) and
his wife would be 30-40.
Tax Records: Jacob is not on the 1811 White Tax list but he
does appear in 1812-1824. Beginning in 1814, he is shown as
Sr. when a second Jacob appears on the list. He is never listed as
having paid a white poll tax which means that he was probably
over 50 in 1812 (birth year = 1772 or earlier). Jacob owns 50
acres in 1824.

NOTE: It LOOKS LIKE the John Franks who was in Blount Co, TN by 1801 could
very likely have been the John (I) Franks who witnessed the 1804 Greenville
Co., SC deed of Jacob Franks. There was enough time (5 Nov 1804 to 26 Nov
1804) for John to have been away from Blount Co. (as far away as Greenville
Co., SC) and yet have returned to Blount by 26 Nov. 1804. My OPINION is that
this is what happened, but I'm afraid that conventional proof of it does not
exist, as no signature could be found of a John (I) Franks in Blount
1801-1819.
One thing is sure, and that is that there were TWO DIFFERENT
JOHN-S FRANKS, one in Blount by 1801 and perhaps remaining there at least
through March 1818, and ANOTHER JOHN FRANKS who appeared on the White Co.,
TN tax lists by 1812 and was still in White Co. in 1818.
I have in times past spoken of "TWO WAVES" of migration among
the Cumberland Co. - Wake Co., NC Franks. In my mind's eye, post-NC,
post-GA, and PRE-Greenville Co., SC land sales (1802-1809), John & a Jacob
Franks (Sr? Jr?) were of record in Blount Co., TN, but that there was a
return in some of their numbers back into Greenville Co., SC to "assist" in
selling family lands in that county. Remember that only HENRY & JACOB
FRANKS were listed on the 1800 Census of Greenville Co., SC. The Greenville
Co.,
SC deeds of sale demonstrate Jacob Franks SR - AND - Jacob Franks, also John
Franks.

JACOB FRANKS who lived in White County in 1811 was born 1755-1775. JACOB,
HENRYand LEMUEL FRANKS were listed as persons south of the French Broad
(River?) in 1809, which indicates these men may have left their home state
together. JACOB, SR. and JACOB, JR. lived at the western tip of the
Horseshoe Bend. JACOB, Sr. lived near Halley's Bluff. He sold a tract of
40 acres with a ten acre tract on the water for which WILLIAM FISHER paid
his $225. Vouching for the sale were WILSON UPCHURCH and DANIEL WALLING.
Disposal of their land occurred of February 1831. JOSEPH CLARK acted as an
agent in the sale of JACOB, JR.'S land. A tract of ten acres which he sold
for $37.50.

Jacob Franks #2 is on the 1840 Marion Census only. He is age
70-80 (1760-1770). So, he is 10-20 years older than Jacob #3
and his family composition is different. He is listed as Jacob jr.
by the census taker. Jacob "Sr." is still living but in Itawamba
County. It is also possible that the younger man in this
household is really Jacob.
It is possible that Jacob #2 and Jacob #3 are the same person, but
the reported ages are different as is the family composition.
Tennessee records are included under Jacob #3 and Jacob #1.

Jacob Franks #3 is in the 1830 Marion Census age 40-50
(1780-1790). I have designated the Jacob Jr. in the 1840 Marion
Census as Jacob #2 as he appears to be an older man. Jacob #3
is in the Marion census age 70 (1780).
1820 White County, TN age 26-45 110010-20010 p344. This
Jacob was born 1775-1794. If the dates are accurate, this is
Jacob #3.
1830 Census: Jacob #3, 0010001-121101. This Jacob is age
40-50 and his wife is age 30-40. . The elder son in the 1820
census would now be 20-26. There are two possibilities, Jacob
20-30, 10001-0001 and Charles 20-30, 00011-00101. Charles is
less likely because there are some older children in his household,
a boy 15-20 and a girl 10-15. There were younger children in
the elder Jacob's household in 1820 but no woman of an age to
be a daughter in law.
1840 Marion Census: Jacob #2, 0211010001-11100101. The
census taker listed him as Jacob Jr. I have designated him as
Jacob #2.
1850 Marion County Census: Jacob 70 NC, Sally 48 NC,
William 8 AL
Lucinda Sarah Ann 18 TN, Mary S. 11 AL, Sarah M. White
(sd) 18 AL. The latter is a step-daughter and Sally is probably a

JAMES FRANKS received a grant for land in 1811. SAMUEL GANN in 1829 sold
the JAMES FRANKS tract to JAMES HOLLAND. Located in the first district on
the north side of the Caney Fork. A second ten acres which he had granted
to him in 1814. It states it followed the meanders of the mountain. The
price was $150. JAMES FRANKS was often a witness for other family members.
He was born 1786 in Georgia he stated in DeSota County, Louisiana in 1850.
His wife, ELIZABETH was born 1800 in Georgia. Living with them were sons,
both born in Tennessee. JACOB T. FRANKS born in 1814 and JOHN A. born 1823.
Another son, JAMES M. FRANKS born 1826 in Alabama.

JEREMIAH FRANKS (ca 1791-1792 GA)
Jeremiah was b ca 1791- 1792 in Georgia.
ca 1814-1815. Jeremiah married Mourning Fisher, daughter of
John Fisher and Elizabeth Tubb. John Fisher was born in
Halifax County, Virginia and lived in Rutherford County, NC
before moving to the Caney Fork area. From an unreferenced
note: John Fisher is in the 1800 Rutherford County, North
Carolina census and on the same page are Peter Franks
(30101-03001) and Henry Franks (12010-40010). Note that
Jeremiah at age 8-9 could have been either Peter or Henry's
household in 1800.
Jeremiah's first child was born in Tennessee 22 Oct 1815.
Jeremiah received a grant of 5 acres from Joseph Franks in
White County., TN in 18--. He also owned land in Warren
County., TN which he sold in 1822 and 1824. His sons were
named Oliver, David and Lemuel.
1820 Census. Jeremiah was about 28 and his wife was about 26
in 1820. Although he owned land in both White and Warren
Counties about 1820, he was not on the census of either county.
At that time, he had one young son (age1) and at least one
daughter (age 4 or 5) and possibly two other daughters age (0-5).

Peter Bain mentioned there, who purchaed the land from Jeremiah
Franks, was my third great grandfather.
I have only one Franks in my database, and coincidentally there is
marriage to a Bain;
DAVID BAIN b 1787 Fluvanna Co, VA to MARY "POLLY" FRANKS.
I do not have any further info except that David Bain was the son of
Robert Edwin Bain and Rachel Flaker Bain, the parents of the above
mentioned Peter Bain, therefore was Peter's brother. I also have that
David Bain died before 1863 in AL.

Some of this seems to mean that Jeremiah's land was listed doubly, both as

Being in the "Mountain District" would have put Jeremiah close to my Gunters
in Warren Co., at least, close to Augustus Gunter and Claiborne Gunter.
Neighbors! The "association" between the lines continues, in my own case,
from Augustus (1) Gunter down into the life of his grandson, William T.
Gunter in Bridgeport, Jackson Co., AL, where William was administrator of
the estate of deceased Benjamin Franks, JP, after the latter man's death
c1853, and where Benjamin's widow, Elizabeth (Vaught) Franks was living in
the household of William T. Gunter, 1860 Cen. Jackson Co. William T. Gunter
was born in Warren Co., TN 1817, son of John G. Gunter (b. NC 1793), son of

JESSE FRANKS becomes the last family in District 4. His land description
was simply described as bounded on the south by the Caney Fork on the north
and west by M. L. MOORE'S land and on the east by widow TEMPLETON'S land.
Taxes for the Insurrection in 1862 were for 200 acres of land. JESSE FRANKS
died in 1865.
His son and executor, WILLIAM FRANKS, reported to the court he was late in
reporting his father's estate inventory. Soldiers had seized and destroyed
his papers. Further he offered to get proper vouchers for the same which
had been destroyed. He could verify these under oath if nessary. MARY
MOORE FRANKS, JESSE'S widow, on 11 May 1869 could not pay her taxes of $7.40
on 85 acres of land. MARY FRANKS does not appear in the 1870 census.

WEEKLY of McAllen, TX
Ralph is a great-great grandson of JESSE FRANKS and MARY (Polly) MOORE
FRANKS, great grandson of WILLIAM FRANKS and ELIZA HOLDER FRANKS, grandson
of FRANCIS MARION FRANKS and MARTHA ANDERSON FRANKS, and youngest son of
JESSE HERMAN FRANKS and LURA MAE KEATHLEY FRANKS. "I have done a good bit
of FRANKS research and have learned a great deal, but the FRANKS history
sure seems to have a lot of Dead-Ends that I can't seem to work out of. For
example, in the very early 1800's, JOSEPH, ELIJAH, HENRY, LEMUEL, JACOB,
PETER, JAMES, JEREMIAH, and JOHN showed up from _____? and from 1810 to 1822
they received 21 land grants totaling 453 acres. These Grants were all in
very close proximity to each other along the CANEY FORK RIVER in the
Southwest corner of White County, TN. After that, from 1827 to 1858, Jesse
received 6 grants totaling 735 1/2 acres in the same area as the others.
Then somewhere along the way, all of the Franks except JESSE left the area
and where they went I have no Idea. I have long suspected that part or all
of them went to Texas. My primary reason for this is that over the years,
Texas has seemed to hold a great deal of
attraction to many of Jesse's descendants, especially the areas of Fannin
and Coryell counties."

One thing is sure, and that is that there were TWO DIFFERENT
JOHN-S FRANKS, one in Blount by 1801 and perhaps remaining there at least
through March 1818, and ANOTHER JOHN FRANKS who appeared on the White Co.,
TN tax lists by 1812 and was still in White Co. in 1818.
I have in times past spoken of "TWO WAVES" of migration among
the Cumberland Co. - Wake Co., NC Franks. In my mind's eye, post-NC,
post-GA, and PRE-Greenville Co., SC land sales (1802-1809), John & a Jacob
Franks (Sr? Jr?) were of record in Blount Co., TN, but that there was a
return in some of their numbers back into Greenville Co., SC to "assist" in
selling family lands in that county. Remember that only HENRY & JACOB
FRANKS were listed on the 1800 Census of Greenville Co., SC. The Greenville
Co.,
SC deeds of sale demonstrate Jacob Franks SR - AND - Jacob Franks, also John
Franks.

JOHN FRANKS paid poll tax in 1812 in DANIEL NEWMAN'S company. A resident of
Warren County, Tennessee in September 1824 when he sold his land in the
Greenbrier Bend of the Caney Fork. JAMES HOLLAND was the purchaser of the
ten acres located in the western tip of end. THOMAS GANN and the river
given as points for locating his land. His witnesses for his sale were
AMBROSE and WILSON UPCHURCH who also lived in Warren County. Neighbors of
JOHN FRANKS in 1820 were JONATHAN Scoggins, Daniel Clark and William
Shirlock. John was born 1755-1775.
A younger JOHN FRANKS lived near the WILHITE and BROYLES families who had
come from Madison County, Virginia by way of North Carolina and Greene
County, Tennessee to White County. A suit was filed against LUKE
DERIN/DEARING by JOHN FRANKS. Saturday morning 21 April 1821 at Sparta,
RHODA FRANKS and THOMAS HOOD had to make restitution to him. THOMAS HOOD
and his wife in 1830 were between 80-90 years old. They appear in the Wake
County, North Carolina census records for 1790. Hillsborough District.
JOHN FRANKS in 1820 stated he was born between 1794-1804. RHODA FRANKS in
1840 was a widow born in 1790-1800, and lived in the second district.
BENJAMIN MARRS was her next door neighbor in 1830 also WILLIAM SCARBOROUGH
and HUGH DYER. RHODA FRANKS born 1795 in North Carolina and a son named
ABROSE born 1828 in Tennessee. These two persons went to live in Pine
Bluff, Arkansas before 1850. RHODA and an unknown. Franks children:
1. ELIZABETH FRANKS married ISAIAH STACEY on 17 September 1840 in White
County, William Little performed the ceremony. Their children:
1. ELIZA JANE STACEY born 1843.
2. COLEMAN G. STACEY born 1846. A COLEMAN G. STACEY was married to
EMMA SWAFFORD on 31 December 1895 in White County.
3. SARAH ANN STACEY born 1849.
2. ALLISARA J. FRANKS married 25 January 1846 to SMITH NEMORE by Joel
Whitely, Esq..
3. THOMAS S. FRANKS married 26 May 1854 CATHARINE JACKSON.
Numerous Jackson families lived in Overton County, Tennessee. President

1840 Census: The only John Franks who is "Head of
Household" is a boy 10-15 in Itawamba County, MS,
031-00112001. The eldest woman in this household is 50-60.
She is older than the eldest woman with John in either the 1820
or 1830 censuses.

widow, Rhoda, and a number of children. She and Thomas
Hood were involved in a lawsuit. By 1850, she was living at Pine

Rogers and several others who moved on to Lawrence Co., TN. I think that my
John Franks met these people there.... His oldest son John Wesley married

daughter of George Rogers... There is immediate relationships between John
Franks and George Rogers in 1826 Lawrence Co., TN... until John Franks died
1838
and about this very same time George Rogers moved on to Tippah Co., MS.

Tennessee to operate a ferry across the Caney Fork in October of 1809. This
would also be a tobacco weighing station. He donated two parcels of land.
The first to be a town square of two acres. The second contained 30 acres,
3 rods and 34 poles of land on which a town named Petersburg was to b e
built. ..........The town of Petersburg had several names before its demise
near the end of the Civil War.........."
"Across the river in Warren County, JOSEPH FRANKS bought a parcel of land in
1810 from the land granted to EPHRAIM DANIEL for military service.
Sharing the same military grant was ABEL HUTSON. A salt petre ine was a
part of the small property.......
In 1810 JOSEPH FRANKS was appointed as a justice of the peace for White
County. ELIJAH FRANKS also served during this period and paid a poll tax in
1812. ELIJAH died in 1816 leaving a son, JOSEPH, and a widow, named POLLY.
JOSEPH FRANKS assumed guardianship of the younger JOSEPH. Neither POLLY nor
JOSEPH, her son, appears in the 1820 census records.

This is speculation, but I believe this is the Lemuel Franks who

1850 Izard Census. At least 3 of the sons from 1830 would have
left home.
1850 Census of Izard County, AR. Lemuel is 65 and from GA.
Nancy is 60 and from VA. There are no children in the
household. Lemuel's age is consistent for the 3 censuses.

You will find Lemuel in Parker County in 1860 Sheet 463B, Dwelling 640,
Family 645. The URL for online viewing is

entered land on Walnut Creek in 1850's.
I am descended from William Lawrence of the 1818 Deed (witness) in White
Co., TN, of 1850 Izard County, AR (Rocky Bayou) along with James Lawrence
(relation unknown) whose wife was Cynthia Franks (Goodspeed History of Izard
County), daughter of Lemuel and Nancy Franks. James Lawrence was in Marion
Co., AL in 1830 near Lemuel. William is also missing in 1820, but James is
a widower in Lincoln Co., TN. If I find more specifics, I'll let you know.

There are other Franks in Izard County. James is 40 and from
TN. He fits in Lemuel's 1830 household (age 20). Jacob is 26
from TN. He would have been 6 in 1830 and fits in Lemuel's
household. He would have been 16 in 1840 and also fits in
Lemuel's household.
Berry Franks age 60 SC and his family are also on the 1850
Izard Census and I have not found him elsewhere. He has a
younger wife (35) and several young children (9 months to 21
years). His children's ages indicate that he was in AL by at least
1829 and arrived in AR between 1848 and 1849.
Jeremiah Franks, also born in GA, and who was about Lemuel's
age and who named one of his sons Lemuel moved to Fulton
County, AR in the 1850's. His land in Fulton was near Izard
and actually became part of Izard in the 1860's.
Lemuel Franks first appears on the White, TN tax lists of
1811-1822 but not later years.

JACOB, JOSEPH and PETER FRANKS were in Wilkes and Franklin County, Georgia
before 1786 when JACOB appraised the estate of ELISHA THURMOND with BURRELL
POPE, BARNEY POPE and THOMAS WOOTEN.
BURRELL POPE had married PRISCILLA WOOTEN. He was born 1752 in Virginia and
died in Wilkes County, Georgia in a part that is now Oglethorpe County.Their
daughter ANN POPE born 1780 married NOAH HILL born 1771, the son of ABRAHAM
HILL born 1732 in Chowan County, North Carolina. Abraham moved to Wake
County, North Carolina in 1785. JACOB FRANKS received a 640 acres land
grant in 1782 in the same county. JACOB, JOSEPH and PETER FRANKS paid taxes
in Wilkes County, Georgia between 1792 and 1794.
LEMUEL, "LUM" FRANKS was a poll tax payer in 1812. He and his family lived
in Izard County, Arkansas in 1850. LEMUEL was born 1785 in Georgia. NANCY,
his wife, was born 1797 in Virginia. She was most likely his second wife,
as JAMES FRANKS lived nearby and he said he was born 1810 in Tennessee.
JAMES lived in Alabama in 1842 and was in Arkansas by 1845.
LEMUEL and SAMUEL GANN witnessed for the land JAMES FRANKS sold in White
County in 1822 to JOHN W. GAWN (sic). A second son of LEMUEL, JACOB FRANKS
born 1824 in Tennessee with his wife, MARGARET born 1825 in Kentucky lived
in the area. Both JAMES II and JACOB had sons named THOMAS.

LEMUEL FRANKS #2
1820 Census: Like his namesake, Lemuel #1, this Lemuel did
not appear on the 1820 Census. If I have correctly identified him
from the 1850 Census, he would have been 25 in 1820. From
the 1830 Census, Lemuel would have been 20-30 (25) in 1820,
his wife would have been 20-30. They would have had two
daughters age 5-10. They could have been missed by the census
taker or living with his family or hers. If they were living with
his family, the only Franks who was included in the 1820 Census
and who had the right composition would be Peter
(000011-30011)
1830 Marion, AL Census: p166 Lemuel Franks Jr. 30-40
(000001-21201). Lemuel would have been 35 based on the
1850 Census and his 1850 wife would have been 30.
1840 Census: There are two "Heads of Households" in the 1840
Marion Census, but they are both too young: page 51 Lemuel
20-30 (12012-3) and also page 51 Lemuel 10-15 (121-10011).
1850 Census of Marion County Lemuel's age in this census (55)
matches the 1830 Census but the age of Hulda (40) is younger
than the 1830 wife; possibly a second wife. None of the children
except daughter Marilla (23) and possibly daughter Syntha (20)
would have been born in 1830. Lemuel 55 NC, Hulda (Gann)
40 TN, Marilla 23 AL, Syntha 20 AL, Martha 18 AL, Barsella
or Mary Ella 14 AL, Sarah 12 AL, James 10 AL, Matilda 8 AL,
William 7 AL, Catherine 6 AL, Peter 5 AL, Jeremiah 3 AL,
Samuel 2 AL and Martha C. 8 mos AL.
Tax Lists of White County: A second Lemuel Franks appears on
the White Co, TN tax list of 1817. This is the only year that I
have found with two Lemuels on the list.
Lemuel Franks fought in the War of 1812. He entered from
Sparta, TN in Jan 1814 when he was 18-19. Jeremiah Franks
testified that he knew Lemuel. His testimony led me to believe
that they knew each other in Tennessee but were not brothers.
Taken from the web page of Bob Franks, these are the children
of Lemuel Franks and Hulda Gann. The census of 1830
indicates several older children if this is the same Lemuel.

The Lewis on this census is only 20-30 and his wife is 15-20. I
will designate this Lewis as Lewis #2. (See GROUP 3).
1850 Marion Co, AL Census: Lewis is listed as age 30 but I
believe this should be 50 ... Lewis 30? NC, Disa 60 GA , Joseph
21 AL, Matilda Chuk 22 AL, p227 59-59 $150
In the 1860 Itawamba census, this same Lewis is listed at 61 and
his wife is 70. In 1870, he's back in Marion County and is now
60 and his wife is 79. Lewis is from NC and his wife is from
GA or NC. Anyone tracing Lewis Franks? Good luck!
Lewis sold 3 3/4 acres of land to John Benjamin, Davis Cochran,
John Lyon and John McLemore on 11 Dec 1822. The land was
next to property of Peter Fanks and was witnessed by Elisha and
Elijah Franks.

LEWIS FRANKS may have been a son of JOSEPH FRANKS. He was appointed
Overseer of the workers assigned to work the road from FRANKS Ferry to the
Cross Roads Landing to Rock Island in October of 1822. The MAGOWNS, GANNS,
SHORTS and three other FRANKS men JOHN, ELISHA and ELIJAH were among the
workers. A LEWIS FRANKS married WINNY SHARPE in Maury County, TN on 17
November 1818. They were living in McNairy County, Tennessee in 1850.
LEWIS gave his age as born in 1795 in South Carolina. WINNY was born 1800
in North Carolina. They were parents of daughters and only one son is
known, JAMES FRANKS born 1846. This county is close to the Hardin County,
Tennessee, Marion County, Alabama and Itawamba County, Mississippi FRANKS
families.

Oliver Franks is the son of Jeremiah Franks and Mourning
Fisher.
1830 Oliver (age 11) is in his father Jeremiah's home. His age is
listed as 0-10 years.
1838: Oliver marries Cynthia Gann in Itawamba County, MS on
March 13. Cynthia is the daughter of John W. Gann and
Mourning Franks. The Ganns path from Caney Fork to Marion,
AL and Itawamba, MS is similar to the Franks' path.

Franks bought former Chickasaw land in Desoto County from
Richard E. Orne for $500 described in the Chickasaw Survey as

of the basis meridian. Oliver sold this land within the year, but I
have misplaced the record.

County, NC and he is over age 45 (30101-03001).
1810 Age 35+ ? There is a Peter in the Rowan County, NC

White Co, TN County Court Minutes (1824-1827), Deed for 5
acres, Peter Franks to James Knowls, proven by oath of Matthias
Hutson and Daniel Gann. (Does this indicate that Peter Franks
was deceased by this time or had moved?)
Peter has not been found in a later census of TN, AL or MS.
The age 26-45 man and woman in Peter's 1820 household have
not been identified.
There is a Peter Franks in the 1840 Claiborne, LA census, but
this is not the White County Peter. The Claiborne County Peter
is the son of Andrew. Younger men in Claiborne include
Josephus and John Franks. (Reference: Cassie)
Tax List of White Co, TN. Peter is not on the 1811 list but he is
on the lists of 1812-1823. He owned 30 acres in 1823.
A note taken from a previous posting on this forum: Peter Franks
m. Elizabeth Richardson in Wake Co, NC in 1780. They moved
to Wilkes Co, GA in 1785 and later to Rutherford Co, NC in
1800 and White Co, TN in 1820 (reference Randy Franks).

PETER FRANKS was, perhaps, the eldest of these MN. A taxpayer in 1812 white
County living in Daniel Newman's company. PETER FRANKS married 24 May 1780
to ELIZABETH RICHARDSON in Wake County, North Carolina. ANDREW FRANKS and
BURL POPE witnessed the marriage. Guilford County, North Carolina court
records in 1786 state he sold land there on 10 November 1786. witnesses for
the transaction were JACOB FRANKS and JOHN TAYLOR. A JOHN TAYLOR married
MARY FRANKS in Wake County, North Carolina 19 May 1786/1798-records do not
agree on the decade-with JOSEPH FRANKS was their security.

WILLIAM FRANKS was summoned to serve as a juror on 2 October 1820. His
other court appearance would come on Friday, 25 January 1822, when he was
indicted with several other FRANKS men for the battering of JOSIAH CAPSHAW.
Although CHARLES FRANKS was the primary person indicted others indicted with
him were JACOB, JOSEPHUS, JOSEPH FRANKS and JOHN MARKHAM. They were
required to bring in cash the sum of $7.30 each in all the sum of $43.00 and
80 cents, also to pay the witness, JOHN FISHER, a witness the sum of $7.50
in cash. CHARLES is not seen again in the records of White County. JOSEPH
FRANKS born 1796 in Tennessee lived in Natitoches County, Louisiana by 1850.
JOSEPHUS FRANKS born 1801 in Tennessee lived in Bossier County, Louisiana.
JOSEPHUS had sons, CHARLES, ISAAC and JOFUS all born in Louisiana.

MOURNING FRANKS GANN (ca 1800-1805 TN)
Mourning's parents are unknown. Her age is not consistent from census to
census, but it is unlikely that she was b after 1805. In all census
reports, she is listed as being born TN. Probably before the Franks arrived
in the Caney Fork area. East TN is a possibility for her birth. She m John
W. Gann in either Warren or White Co, TN c 1818-1820. First child b before
1820 census.
1820 White County, Tennessee Census: John Gann
100100-00100. Mourning's age in this census was 16-26
(1794-1804) and she had her first child.
1830 Marion County, Alabama Census: John W. Gann
120001-210001. Mourning's age in this census was 30-40
(1790-1800).
1840 Itawamba County, Mississippi Census: John Gann
3110101-0121001. Mourning's age in this census was 40-50
(1790-1800).
John W. Gann died before the 1850 census, probably after the
family had moved to Desoto Co, MS.
1850 Desoto Co, MS Census: Mourning Gann 45 TN, Jesse 18 AL, Rachel 16 AL,
John 14 AL, James 12 AL, Joshua 12 MS, Martha 8 MS. William Gann (24 TN)
and Samuel Gann (28 TN) were also living in Desoto Co 1850 in their own
households.

Gann (46 AL) and West Gann (30 MS) living in Tate County, which I assume was
divided from Desoto County. All but M.A. Gann are sons of Mourning Franks
Gann.
